If the dog already knows his status and accepts it then I think rules can be relaxed.

My Dane is not allowed on furniture or beds at any time and knows it. Nit allowed to beg or be around the dinner table. Sleeps beside my bed at night and licks plates at night. Has full run of the house- carpets included. If

Sounds like the dog is in charge, I would hate to be a visitor to your house. It is the modern way though, just let an animal do what it likes.

Why would you hate to be a visitor , We keep chairs covered with blankets if the dog makes a move to sit with us , and on the bed only weekend mornings , and then with an over sheet ,
Never on furniture if we have visitors .
The dog sees us as part of her pack ,understands who is pack leader( not her ) , and knows her place which is close to us

So pretty much the opposite to what you put in your first post?
I've never met a dog which knows which day of the week it is so can see you're confusing yours with all these split rules, they can be intelligent, but that much.
In my house it's simple, the dogs place is on the floor or in its own bed. Beds and furniture are for humans, not animals.
A dog does not know if it's worse off this way as it's been like that since day one so it's perfectly happy, it doesn't talk to its mates or go on FB to find out others are getting more than it does.

I have a friend who like you lets the dog do what it wants at certain times. When I visit I go in my old clothes and have to park my car outside his house (not on the drive) as the dog just doesn't know what is what and he has no control over it. I actually went round there the other day in my workshop overalls!

If you’ve made an effort to follow the rules and the dog does what it wants, Yes.

If you’ve relaxed the rules as it’s not worth the effort to follow, Yes.

If you’ve decided having lived with a dog to allow these things for your own pleasure, possibly No.

Simple trick with a dog related to me by the shepherd I got my collie from....
Never let a dog through a door before you. Simple mastery.

Wouldn’t want to be a dog in your home.... sounds like it’s halfway between OCD and a control freak?

You’ve realised that your dog is not a pet but part of your family and pack... and as such it rewarded with all the perks of family life. All four of ours enjoy the couch, the bed, hugs and everything else that being a member of the pack awards.....

Wouldn’t want him in my home full stop. Such contempt he holds for his friends he turns up in work gear. Because a bit of loose hair is the same as oil, dirt and god knows what.

I’m sure it’s mutual and I’m fine with that. Life is too short.

Thanks , only dog owners would understand the un conditional love you get from the dog , it is only right you should return it , and enjoy the pleasure the dog shows when ever you enter the room , or return from a SHORT trip out .

My dog was trained not to go on any furniture when I got her but I realised I could only stroke her from my wheelchair if she was higher. So I let her get on my bed.
It took some convincing for her to get on, and she still waits for permission, but the pleasure we both get from it is immeasurable.
What’s a few hairs in the grand scheme?

Fortunately the only visitors to my home are dog lovers themselves, who have similar (or in some cases even fewer) rules than me.

My dogs = family.

Not allowed upstairs, to beg at the dining table or to jump up, still does it all anyway though...

Same here. Although I sometimes think the visitors come to see our dog, rather than us laugh

Our three have the run of the house, furniture, beds etc, we wouldn't have it any other way.
