I’d really appreciate some advice please. My puppy had her first vaccination at 8 weeks (I believe Nobivac 4), she’s just had her second jab at 12 weeks (Nobivac DHP). I was led to believe that a week from now she’d be free to go outside without worry. However, the receptionist at the vets told me yesterday that a third vaccination now needs to be scheduled in another 4 weeks and won’t be fully covered until then.

I was told that she can go out in five days time (following the second round of vaccinations) but will need to avoid certain areas and dogs of which we’re unsure). I would ask the vet directly for clarification but due to Covid restrictions pup is handed over at the door to a receptionist and then handed back a few minutes later by the same person. I’m given conflicting advice by support staff and Google is full of conflicting information.

Why three rounds of vaccinations - some vets seem to do two? And when exactly can my dog mix unencumbered with other dogs? Thank you for any help here.

Im sure ours had 2 sets of vaccinations (my missus deals with this) but we got mixed messages on when they could be taken outside. Some said 1 week others said 3.

Try and call the practice and ask to speak to the Vet. Even if they are busy they should offer a call back service.

Am trying to remember exactly what we did for ours but looking at the Nobivac instructions it sounds like they are Ok to go out a week after the first DHP, providing they are more than 10 weeks old when they get the jab. Obviously it’s best if you avoid high risk areas.

It’s such an important age for them to be out getting socialised that I think it would be a mistake to keep your pup in any longer than the absolute minimum, even if it does mean running a bit of risk.

Thanks for the advice. We’ve been taking her out and about in a sling but she’s getting heavy and seriously lanky! I swear she has more than four limbs when they’re all tucked up!

The receptionist at the vets did say we could take her out five days after the second set of vaccinations but was rather vague on what to watch out for. A little digging on Google turned up some advice about avoiding waterways and unvaccinated dogs but there seems to be so much contradictory advice out there.

Our lab had nobivac DHPPi/L at 8 weeks, DHP at 10. Allowed out at 11 weeks, L4 at 12 weeks, allowed in dirty water a week after that.

So our 3rd was lepto4. Was recommended for a Lab with canals, ponds, reservoirs etc all around us.

ETA. You really want to get puppy out and about, off lead and socialising long before 17weeks!

I'd suggest getting out a week after the second, avoiding anywhere wet and be wary of unknown dogs.

Thanks for the reply. She ventures out from Saturday then. We have a river just opposite the house so I’ll be keeping her well clear of that until after her third and final round of jabs. She’s a lab too so I can’t wait to get her in the water for the first time.

Here's maple at 12 weeks, day before she had her 3rd jab (which was the L4).

I don't think she actually swam until she was about 6 months though, and even then was "encouraged" by my boys who were in the water alongside her!!

I presume you have a photo of the little lady? smile

She's lovely. Work hard with her for the first 12-18 months, then enjoy.

The training started from day one. I can’t stand poorly trained dogs - or perhaps I should say lazy owners!

Seriously cute! Is that the final round of vaccinations or is there a third to go?

Both mine only had two lots of vacs.
One that was done by the breeder and then one that I had done.

Both had Lep 2 as I won’t give Lep 4, and neither will have anymore vaccinations unless a titre test says they need them. (I don’t give flea or worm treatment either)
