I would like to start by saying
- this isn't my fish tank
- i know nowthing about fish etc..
- just one something simple i can chuck in and deal with the issue.

lets begin.

Parents have a fish tank that's in the conservatory with about 4-5 coy ([i'm guessing) in it. dimensions are
100cm wide
30cm deep
40cm tall.

it doesn't take long after cleaning before the water goes all green, the fish seem fine. I'm contemplating purchasing some kind of UV sterilizer to chuck in. I don't know if it's best to buy a light that fits inside the top of the tank or whether to buy one of these green killing machine UV sterlizer pumps. For £35 it seems like it would be a simple case of chucking it in, turning it on, and in up to about 7 days it'll become clear again.

I know nothing about any of the additional things to consider, but is this a good idea?

As said..i'm not too interested in this whole thing, and don't really want to invest much of my own time/effort into it. But can anyone vouch for the effectiveness of these things, how long would the UV light in them last for? how much to replace... and once it's clear would you really have to keep it on constantly? or maybe on a timer. or have it on every other day.

appriciate the thoughts.

What filtration is the tank running ?

How big are the Koi ?

Koi are dirty and hungry feeders, are probably getting overfed, AND dont belong in a tiny tank like that......

The key with in your post is conservatory. Direct sunlight is the number one cause of green water/algae.

A UV steriliser will only kill off free flowing micro-organisms.

I would suggest a large water change and moving it from direct sunlight, or shading it somehow.
