Passed these fellas many times since May and they are always wearing these mask things, passing them at speed I thought they were blinkers or some such device to stop them biting each other.

Close up they are like the anti-spitting things that coppers put on drunk people.

This is Ida, who lives in a field next door.

She has an allergy to flies - not just in the eyes - so she has to wear this covering all summer long.

The holes in the sides are for access to the straps that hold the covering on. This is a new covering
and when I first saw Ida in the field, from a distance, I thought, "Why's she dressed as HMS Victory?"

I don't know how scientifically current ant-fly meaures for horses are, but a zebra's striped coat has been shown to greatly discourage biting flies. https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/02/zebra-stri...

I thought it was just for camouflage when they’re crossing the road.

I was expecting this thread to be about SJP. Now that’s one horse face that needs a mask!

That fencing .... lethal no electric to keep them from pushing it over and sheep netting is just perfect
for getting horses legs stuck in and injured yikes
Masks are ok however if you use an American fly spray like farnam tri tec that actually works
there is less need for masks and no need for boet rugs ...IMHO ...

Sprays can work, but aren't much good if the horses are out 24x7 and it rains...

We tend to use Barrier Super Plus - seems to work well and is about £60 for 5 litres, compared to £160 for 3.8 of Tri Tec.

Although the biggest problem for one of the horses on the yard is that the neighbouring horse keeps reaching over the fence and taking the mask off.

The masks work, but the fly thing is a cover up:
Have you ever seen it reported that a horse has been "done" for robbing a bank for example ?

Proves the masks work.

They make it hellishly difficult to brush your hair though.

They need the masks when they enter shops and on public transport
