My local tidal river/harbour is a magnet for families to go crabbing, which is lovely as I support getting kids out and doing 'stuff' in the open air instead of sitting in front of their iplads or whatever.

However, there is a general need to fill a bucket with as many crabs as possible (usually by the Dads!) and in hot weather a bucket full in a pint or two of water will soon heat up... thus slow cooking the captive crustacean.

When they've 'cooked' for an hour or so they are usually dumped back in the oggin without a thought.

Anyone else think this is unacceptable?

Actually I completely agree with OP
I see it year after year in my hometown. I have no idea how many times these crabs get lined out the water to then end up in buckets of poorly oxygenated water before being thrown (from a fair height) back in the water but it is a lot.

I wouldn't have issue if people just took a bit of time to consider these are live creatures that deserve to be treated better.

This but some people are incredibly thick. Probably the same type that litter our country parks.

My kids loved crabbing when they were young. Had friends in North Norfolk so used to go up often and spend the day. But only ever kept 2 or 3 in a bucket for 15 mins or so before putting them back.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. It has been a few days since we started the CLM campaign locally and the response so far has been good and we are confident that the message is being spread.

Generally folk don't realise by putting the crabs in a bucket could cause them stress and potentially kill them if left for a long time, in the sun, and without doubt most crabbers don't want to cause them harm.

Please spread the word.

What temperature is too warm for a crab? What temperature are the buckets of water?
