My 11 year old collie cross Beth. Spleen cancer biopsy.
Discussion
Beth went to the vet today, ostensibly to have her spine looked at for a repeat problem from last year, in which she would cry in pain when getting up from her bed and lifting herself after squatting to wee. It didn't seem so bad this time, but we recognised the signs earlier this time. The conversation progressed to blood tests and her current weight as opposed to her last visit. We've made a lot of effort, more so recently, to keep her weight down, not easy with a rescue dog, and her weight currently is bang on right for her size, 18 kilos compared to 20 a few months ago.
Until the discussion of her weight came up, we were preparing to take away some painkillers and leave. However, despite our explanations, the vet seemed to focus on the weight loss as being significant in relation to other possible problems, and we stayed while blood tests and and an x ray were performed, after which we were informed that there appeared to be a shadow on Beth's spleen. The upshot of this is a biopsy tomorrow, followed if necessary by an op later the same day. Unless it transpires that the shadow is not just on her spleen, in which case no point in operating and she'll have about 3 months to live.
I've come out of this fairly traumatised. I posted on here about 2 years ago after she had a couple of fits, leading to anxiety about the suggestion we brace ourselves for the onset of a brain tumour. Thankfully the fits seemed isolated and she has generally been well since.
We've been given to expect no more than a 50/50 chance that this is something/nothing. I suppose I'm posting this because I'm hoping to read positive outcomes from others who have experienced anything similar.
