Luckily, of the avian variety.

I have house sparrows in the void every year, I'm fine with this, there are normally right in the corner.

From today, the noise is coming from about two metres into the roof. Its loud and a constant chirp every three seconds.

I also heard the sound of falling debris in the cavity earlier.

Do we think they are in trouble? I don't want to open up that bit of the roof and disturb them if its just them getting on with their business and they have young chicks...but equally, I don't want them dying - the law, council and RSPCA have been no help!

I see from your profile that you are in the South West. If you're anywhere near Secret World in Highbridge, Somerset, they may be able to help/offer advice.

We took them a baby blackbird years ago that had been abandoned by its parents and they were great.

Watch out for food being taken in perhaps?

Thanks both, have been keeping an eye out for parents bringing food. Nothing yet. I noticed there was a magpie knocking around so maybe that forced them inside.

I'm gonna ring the lovely folk at secret world tomorrow for advice - great suggestion. Thanks.

Magpie makes sense. We've had a lot of house sparrows nesting in the eaves in gaps in the tiles, but today we had a Magpie sitting on the roof looking for (I suspect) prey. Then to day we had a visitor- a young sparrow in the hallway. ( At this time of year ,I lift off the loft hatch to let hot air inside the house rise into the loft, and the wind across the roof take the heat out. ). Sparrow found it's way out of loft and into bathroom. It wasn't too stressed when I shut it in bathroom and opened the main window to let it out.
