Spotted a handful of these this morning getting it on together after I watered the lawn.

What are they please?

Looks like some type of ichneumon wasp try to identify from these images

I think the dragonfly and wasp suggested have bodies which are too thin, but I have found something similar now, the sawfly.

Definitely some kind of Sawfly I'd say.

How big were they ?

Giant Wood Wasps are part of that family and are pretty massive and intimidating looking things.

I’d estimate at around 3-4cm in length.

The more I look at the images of sawflies the more that seems to be the one smile

It's not a sawfly. Abdomen shape and markings quite different. Pretty sure it's an ichneumon
