Hi all.

Hoping for advice. We have had our boys since they were 6 weeks old. They are as good as gold, both neutered. Approximately two weeks ago however, one of our boys (black) keeps mounting his brother (tabby) and biting the scruff of his neck. We cannot determine what has started this behaviour.

It isn’t overly aggressive and tabby doesn’t appear too affected by it and just shakes it off, but it is becoming more and more common to the point I imagine it is getting on his nerves! Besides from the lockdown meaning we are both at home more often and therefore tabby tends to be out in the day rather than in while we are working, there have been no other changes to our daily life.

Our black cat, the culprit, has been a house cat since day one. He may go out for ten minutes a day in total, but this is normal for him and has never been any different.

Initially I was clapping my hands and it has reached the stage I have to spray water to stop this happening, but what I don’t want to do is punish unnecessarily if there is an explanation for this and to cause them undue stress. It is happening early mornings too so I am getting up in the early hours several times. Any experiences or thoughts appreciated.

If it’s anything like my two vermin, they’re (re)asserting their position in the family hierarchy.

I happen to have a PhD in feline social psychology. 'Black' appreciated your applause during his performances, taking this as a sign of your approval, and he was left puzzled and disappointed when the applause stopped. He is desperately trying to win back your approval.
