We have a soon to be 5yr old male tabby who will shortly be getting a little sister to play with in 5-6 weeks time.

The Mrs was never a cat person but is now converted and is leading the way on this one much to my surprise.

She has found a local breeder with beautiful little full pedigree Persian kittens and has picked the little one already.

Years ago, while still living at home, we had a pure white half Persian called Leroy who loved to be outside, playing in puddles and rolling about in muck and soil (loved water) and as all out cats have always been outside + inside cats my questions are:

Should the new arrival be kept indoors at all times?
If so, is it difficult/unfair on the other cat to have one cat allowed out, and one not?

I know there will be a lot of grooming involved, even more if allowed outside plus there will be the odd dingleberry to deal with either way.

Are there any character traits off the full breed that I may not be aware of?

Thanks for reading.

I have known full Persians live both lifestyles, can depend on the individual cat tbh.

Also worth checking with the breeder some have quite strong feelings about how their kittens should be housed.

If you ahbe the space and inclination you could always build a cat run attached to the house.

Absolutely not. They are, by and large, animals that enjoy going outside, and should not be deprived of that.

They should be kept in until at least neutered after that it very much depends on the individual cat.

Some pure breeds actually aren't that well suited to outdoor life. I do agree they should be given the option though they are at an increased risk of eg theft so cat runs can be a compromise

Persians can be quite clumsy, they aren't always the most agile re climbing trees, jumping fences etc smile

Thanks for the replies.

I will check with the breeders closer to the time their views on going outside, however I do think it's only right that cats should be allowed out where safe to do so.

Like any new kitten, she will be kept inside until probably about 6+ months and all boosters and treatments are up to date before venturing out. I can envisage her having 1 litter to fulfil those maternal instincts then neutered.

Hopefully our other cat will help with the grooming workload.

Never breed because you think it will benefit their maternal instincts, it just isn't true. Spay at 6 months an she will never end up stressed out on heat etc, plus the breeder you are getting her from may not allow it.

Grooming from the other cat will be insignificant, that will all be on you smile,

Looking forward to pics when she arrives!

I assume you have read up about PKD in Persians, it is a genetic defect so worth checking the breeders line is clear of it.
