Too small for a rat. Bank vole is my guess. Our garden is riddled with them. Harmless, and won't come into the house. You might see them running around during the day if you're lucky.

We're not near water - would it be a regular vole? no bank involvement biggrin

Bank voles don't live near water. That’s water voles. See link above.

Where is it in relation to your house?

Rats can get through holes the size of a 50p, mice a 5p.

Some information on rodent holes. https://www.discoverwildlife.com/how-to/identify-w...

Unfortunately bank vole holes aren't covered, but ours look like your photo. It might possibly be a yellow-necked mouse, but they're rarer (they also won’t come in your house). My money is on bank vole, but the only way you'll know for sure is to set up a camera, or watch the hole.

I've counted 6 holes, but unfortunately not seen any critters. The holes aren't near the house, but they are near the septic tank soakaway - I guess they are hunting for worms!
