So, my folks have a lovely old girl (8) who lives indoors and has had some health issues, but is a delight in every way.

One of the side-effects of the health issues (validated by the vet) is that her urine absolute stinks. Like worse than any other cat I've ever know. Like needing to change the litter tray every other day so that the house doesn't smell like a crazy old cat lady's. Even a hooded tray does little to stop the odour.

They use bog-standard Catsan (blue bag, white chalky litter) stuff, and I wonder if anything exists to help stretch that litter change out to 4-5 days (or what I would consider normal for a single cat) to avoid so much waste. I'd consider clumping litter as an option, because the Catsan stuff is very difficult to scoop out dirty litter.

I seem to remember trying something called SaniCat (crystals in a pink bag) in the past, but I'm struggling to find it these days.

Has anyone had any successful experiences with this kind of thing? Googling brings a lot of options up, but I'm loathe to scattergun without any recommendations.

Maybe look at getting a Cat Genie litter tray that washes and cleans the cat litter?

My folks are retired, so scooping happens pretty quickly. On reflection, it's potentially more of an issue that they can't scoop the wet clumps out, because the Catsan stuff tends to crumble when damp rather than clump together.

Ours is on cage rest having had a minor scrap with a car and we're using Trust 100% Wood cat litter. First one I've ever come across that doesn't smell disgusting.

Obviously it's got cat per and poo on it, so you're swapping it daily, but it doesn't smell horrendous during that time.

In that case maybe look at getting clumping clay litter. I use a mixture of lightweight and clumping in my trays as I find 100% clumping tends to weld itself to the tray too much wheres as a bit of lightweight litter added to it just gives it enough of the right texture to hold together but come away from the tray easily.

My only thought with the Cat Genie was it washes the litter so the smell is removed from the bits of wee that touches the tray as well as the litter. I'd love one but I'd need about 5 of them as I have 8 cats and I do not have room for that many in my house frown

Sanicat 'Zen' from Zooplus. It clumps, plus is scented.

The trick with clumping litter is to use a deep enough layer so the clumps can form. 3 - 4 inches.

I get the silica crystals from Wilko's for £3.50 a bag.
Best litter to use in my opinion and is very good at controlling odour.
Would never go back to ordinary litter now.

We use cat's best OKO. From zooplus.

Clumps well if you put a deep enough layer.

Silica crystals is probably the best

After which, wood chips pellets.

Silica masks smells the best.

Also a litter tray with a hood.

Thanks very much for this. This is so cheap for silica litter and the reviews are brilliant. I'll be buying this.
