I have always been able to calm the most worried of owners when their pet is poorly but I am hopeless when it is one of my own four legged friends!!

Mabel our 4yr old Whippet is a live wire, even when dozing she can be alert and ready for action in seconds, she can actually be hard work sometimes!! (and yet so lovely as well smile ) she seemed fine first thing, ate her breakfast etc. By mid morning she had been sick and was down in the dumps. By teatime it was obvious she was feeling like st. Took her to the vets, normal temp, normal colour, not too much pain abdominally, very little to go on. Anti sickness meds given, bland diet reck tom. Tonight she has not moved from her bed, she only ate a spoon of food left the rest (Mabel is a gannet with food!!) if not much better tom it will be bloods and iv fluids for her, did question whether to do that tonight but seemed premature at the time, now I am thinking we should have frown. No idea what has caused this. She is a scrounger re foodstuffs but they were lead walked yesterday (due to where we went) and I can't think of anything she could have eaten recently to trigger it. Our other dog seems confused by her behaviour today bless him.

This is so out of character for her that I am sleeping downstairs with her tonight!

Sorry to hear that bex.

This happened to us 5 weeks ago.

I hope Mabel feels better soon.

Hope she's ok, our cocker was poorly a couple of weeks ago and it's horrible to see them so listless.

Hope all. Is well and it's nothing too serious.

Daphne used to go through phases like this (hasn't happened for a while now though), off her food which is very strange as she loves her food, tired and sleepy, it would last 48 hours and she would bounce back, it was like a switch being turned back on.

The vet reckoned it was something she had eaten, which didn't agree with her; she did love a scavenge in the garden.

I guess this happened 4 or 5 times, after the 3rd time we just monitored it ourselves as it always followed the same pattern and never went on longer than 2 days.

Still flat as anything this morning, won't eat or drink, very reluctant to get out of her bed. Never ever known her like this in the almost 4yrs we've had her. I actually slept downstairs with her.

Just to add to the stress I checked her insurance policy, I remembered that she had an exclusion on anything gasto intestinal. (long story relating to before we got her).

I have to go to work for a couple hours but have appt for when I get back.

Thank you for the replies.

No help with any suggestions unfortunately, but hope she is feeling better again soon! Hopefully the vet appointment clears it up!

+1

Everything crossed that it's nothing and she'll be whizzing around again.

They have admitted her. Got home from work and she went straight from their crate to her bed. She is so miserable.

so iv fluids, bloods, abdo scan to try and see what has triggered it.

All 3 of ours have had similar episodes in recent weeks, Sooty in particular is NEVER ill, but last week would not leave my side, eat or drink for 24 hours.

All of a sudden she sprang back to life as if nothing had happened. Puts me on a real downer when they get ill :-(

I might have been tempted to wait a while longer but she is starting to dehydrate and she is pray bowing due to abdominal discomfort as well as retching and gulping so really wasn't happy to leave her to try and sort it out herself at that point.

Looks like an acute pancreatitis type episode, her symptoms and behaviour, blood results and scans pointing towards that,

So in the vets tonight for continues iv fluids and ivv pain management (iv paracetamol which is amazing stuff, speaking from experience!) and hopefully will be ok to come home tomorrow.

Still none the wiser as to what triggered it though.

Poor Mabel, she looks so poorly frown

I hope the overnight stay at the vets does the trick and that she is soon back to normal. Everything crossed here.

Of course firstly, all the best, hope she GWS. But, the above bit, you are a vet, so why do you require taking her to another?

I am a veterinary nurse so we still have to take our pets to the vets. Actually so do vets, they don't keep many things at home.

I don't work full time as a vn anymore. I do some Saturdays as a locum nurse at a practice that is not that near to me (I would have taken her to them otherwise)

Not quite working out what you mean. Her gums are a bit tacky as she is a bit dehydrated and sl pale probably due to pain, her crt was OK, she should recover now she is on fluids and good pain meds.
