Dogs on artificial grass
Discussion
Helloooooo,
We might be buying a property which currently has artificial grass laid to the rear. We are hoping to get a dog once we move and I was wondering if anyone has experience with dogs on artificial grass?
For some reason I've got it in my head that it's not a great idea but it seems it may actually be a better idea than real grass due to non staining from wee and being ok to be hosed down etc. etc.
Any views appreciated.
Thank you

If you've got a dog, leave it!
When we got a dog, he wrecked the grass and we put down artifical frass. When we moved out 4 years later, it was still pristine!
Only thing I'd mention, is check if there is an 'underlay' under the grass layer. If so, I'd take that out, as that can start to smell.

I've had artificial grass put down specifically because I have dogs!
A hyperactive dog going mental will reduce a nice lawn to churned up mud in no time at all! At my last house, there was literally no grass left. The artificial stuff was great. This was a few years ago, but at the time it did really vary in price and opted for something with a guarantee and looked quite real.
In the summer months, if it went a while without any rain, it did start to smell a bit. I used to use diluted Jeyes fluid and a pressure washer and it cleaned it up really well. The only issue with this is that the garden then stinks of jeyes fluid but am sure there are less smelly products out there now specifically for this purpose.

How hot does it tend to get in the summer? My Dad lives in Mallorca and his artificial grass around the pool gets very hot (almost too hot to walk on) in the summer.
On some of the Facebook groups i'm on there are various posts where people ask about artificial grass, and the warning is heat.dogs tend to lie on grass, even if its ok to walk on it wont cool your dog down should it lie on the grass.
I moved from a house with a regular garden, to a house with no garden at all but a roof terrace with artificial grass.
I've been here over a year now, no issues at all. Even my dogs that like to chew stuff haven't damaged the grass. From a couple of < 10kg dogs up to a pit-bull and a dogo Argentino they've all been superb. I can now leave the roof terrace open when I go out, they can go relax in the sun and go to the toilet when they want. I feel far safer leaving them like this than in my old house with just a front gate/fencing that would be far easier to get my dogs out of.
Ideally they do solid turds and you can just easily bag them, its a bit of a mess when they do a proper runny one though It doesn't go away itself when you've got astroturf on top of concrete, compared to regular grass on dirt...
