Hi everyone. After a bit of advice tonight before the vets open in the morning.

We have a 10 month old french bulldog. Generally active and playful.

Myself and my wife have both been out at work today and the mother in law has been looking after the dog. She’s been for a walk longer than we would usually take her on and tonight she’s just lying on the sofa, sleeping.

When I have encouraged her to move it’s taken a lot and it’s clear she doesn’t want to use her hind legs. She immediately sits back down and it looks like she’s stiff.

I’ve spoken to the mother in law who says that she was fine on her walk and fine when she left her at ours (about 90mins before me coming home)

Is it likely that the dog has been over excerxised and just needs rest or is there likely some bigger issue? (I know it’s not easy to tell from this but just want an idea)

One of ours displayed similar symptoms last year after a particularly violent fit.

The fit isn't really relevant, somehow, he'd caused damage to his back.

We were proper worried & couldn't get to the vet until the Monday (this was Saturday). Called the vet & was advised plenty of rest. When we took him in, they gave him a course of anti inflammatory & we had to do leg manipulation 3-4 times a day for a week.

He's less stable than he used to be post fit, but on the whole, back to normal.

Hope you get a quick resolution.

Does your vet have 24 hour cover (as in the ability to phone and potentially speak to a vet or vet nurse for advice)?

If so, I would recommend using it to put your mind at rest.

Hope everything is okay, please keep us updated.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately we don’t my have 24 hour facility with our vets.

She does have previous for this. A few months ago she jarred her leg and wouldn’t use it. The vet looked at it and found nothing and concluded she was enjoying the attention and getting carried around. I’m hoping this is similar.

darren9, perhaps she's just doing the 'Frenchie Army Crawl'?

These funny little dogs seem to enjoy doing that crawl - have a look on YouTube and you'll see that it's far from uncommon.

Hope your little girl is fine!

Morning all.

She’s woke up this morning and is absolutely fine! She’s currently flying around the house after her ball and jumping up on the sofa. Completely back to her old self.

I think the mother in law has walked her too far yesterday as she “looked like she was enjoying it” but the rest seems to have worked.

Back to shorter walks from now on I think.

Thanks for everyone’s advise. We’ve had mastiffs in the past and this little frenchie seems a little more fragile.

Frenchies are funny creatures .... I always give ours 24 hours (at least), I spent a few grand when one of ours was a puppy on back X-Rays, vet visits, other x-rays because he wouldn’t use one of his back legs, woke up one day and he was fine ... this was over 3 / 4 weeks!

Currently have two, just coming up to 4 and 5 years old and their oddities haven’t stopped yet smile

Glad to hear she is better!

As you noted, ours do not go on long walks, 1 hour absolute max, in the summer / warmer weather it’s morning, night or not at all (we have a garden for them to play in) and I always have water and a bowl with me when we are out.

An hour and a half a walk for a pup is far too long.

Sorry, the walk wasn’t 90 minutes. She was left on her own for 90 mins after the walk and prior to me coming home.

All sorted now and she’s much better
