Not as poignant, but very dramatic.

About six years ago, my elderly rescue cairn passed away . A month or so later the same rescue contacted me to ask if I would consider re homing a lost little lass. She turned out to be a Wheaten Cairn, suspected to be a brood bh at a puppy farm. There was no record as to whether she had been found roaming the streets or left tied up . My experiences showed that she hated being stood outside a supermarket ( so draw your own conclusions). Many's the time, even in the height of summer, she'd drag me to the car and sit on the rear seat ,with the rear door open. She was more comfortable like this than sitting outside the shop. My groomer told me that she had only seen a dog coat like Shona on a dog where it had been bred constantly . Once speyed and fed on good quality food, Shona's coat returned to normal. But her teeth needed attention, from her past life.
And this showed up health problems.
Over the next couple of years she started slowing down on walks and a reluctance to jump into the rear of the car. We put the former down to her love of finding dumped treats ( chicken bits in bushes) and the latter to her getting a bit overweight.
Then one day, she started to have problems with one of her hind legs, and she let us know that she wasn't happy on her walk. VET -and nothing was found. Over the next couple of days she was stable. Then at 7AM on Saturday, I heard a horrible sound. She'd collapsed and was in pain. We found her bed wet with P. And she was dragging her hind end. VET- where it was found that there was no feeling in her paws. I had a few choices, but Shona gave me only one ,with a look. "Dad, I'm in pain- END it". Many folks say dogs can't talk- that morning she talked to me ,loudly and clearly.

Happily this story has a happy ending. I couldn't find any Cairns looking for a home, so I went looking for th next thing- a Westy. Then one day in a rescue centre in Deby ,where the Westy had been reserved, a little JRT cross spotted me, and wanted me to check her out. We met- Lexi decided that of all the folks that had tried to make friends ,we were the chosen ones. Another little lost lass looking for a special home.

I've never had to make that decision myself, thankfully, but I'm sure Shona is grateful for your doing the right thing for her.

Hope Lexi goes some way to filling the emptiness for you.

There are many of us here who have been through that process, and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we share your grief and pain. It's the most awful of days. But ultimately it's the most kind thing we can do. Very sorry to read this.

Sorry for your loss. But her soul is with you now and always. Try to remember the good times, she will.

I will always remember her with love, but I'll always look and wonder at WHY Lexi spotted us and why she was so keen to befrend us. Many folks before us had tried to home her. But Lexi chose us. She is so like Shona ( that could have been). Every dog that we knew with Shona has accepted Lexi as a friend. It's almost as if ,somewhere above, Shona's soul is telling these dogs to accept Lexi as a friend.

Because your souls have been together before.

One of our rescues was brought into our house, came and said hello then curled up and went to sleep in the corner like he'd been here his whole life. He knew we were his family from the second we met him.

That was the only explanation I could think of. That was Lexi- she hesitated, then came to me for a fuss and a treat. Then she settled on Swimbo's knee ,to give Swimbo a love ( and Swimbo is not swayed by dogs, but that got to her). Swimbo was sold.
We did take Lexi back to the rescue a few months later ,and Lexi was adamant that my knee was her place. She did return affection to the staff, but it was obvious that she saw us as her family. Lexi pulled us back to the car( after we eft the centre) and was only too happy to get back in.
