Hi everyone,

This is Sadie;

She just moved to Bristol and right now is quite a sad cat, she hasn't been outside in the new place for a few days now and really needs a cat flap. She is used to being let outside by me opening our front door and then she'll sit outside meowing to tell us she's ready to come back in again.

Anyway, I'm looking at getting one of these SureFlap catflaps and programming it to her microchip.

Question is - anyone have any experience of costs involved in terms of installing one of these, either in a wooden door or in a pane of double glazing? Some estimates would be really helpful for anyone who's had this thing installed. What's the damage likely to be to my bank account?

TIA!

I've fitted them myself several times. Wooden door is going to be the easiest and cheapest.

With double glazing, you'll need to get a new panel made with the holes in the glass cut, and then sealed.

Wooden door just needs a drill and a jigsaw.

I don't know how much it'll cost to get someone else to do it though.

When we moved house we fitted a new flap into the double glazed glass panel that sits alongside our garden access door. The glazing company made a new ( shortened ) double glazed panel for £150, and it was another £50 to fit it, when the full sized glass panel was removed.

Its a great fit and the glazier did a great job of installing it. That was in 2011, so prices may vary. they are a local company and are excellent for prices.

Picture shows the finished article.

I have to add that our cat needed about 6 months of intensive training to get him to use it !

Easy enough to fit if you are handy at d-I-y. I've fitted about three magnetic ones.

They usually come with a template and instructions.....(Staywell)

If you are not confident get a chippy.

I've got a jigsaw and drill at the ready to fit a new Sureflap microchip pet door to replace the catmate elite timer which have up the ghost after 4 years. It's easy enough to offer up to the door, mark, drill then cut if you have a upvc door.

I would fit to a backdoor or side door rather than front though.

I have a very capable builder/joiner friend in Bristol who could do it for you if required.

Could you PM me the details please? That's a very useful offer of help, and probably we'd go for putting it in the wooden front door to save the cost of new windowpanes!

Thanks for the comments everyone.
