As per thread title, As it’s getting noticeably darker in the mornings and evenings, I’m after a clip on type light for Jussi’s collar. I’m after something that is easy enough to get on and off, but once it’s clipped on, it stays clipped on.

I remember Googling about 12 months ago and found a load that seemed to be about three to five quid, but they don’t seem to be about at the moment. One that keeps coming up is the Orbiloc brand, which is available for between £15-20 and seems massively over engineered, as it’s waterproof down to 100 metres, which I’m fairly sure Jussi isn’t. They do look good though and this being PH, over engineered seems ideal!

I want one with the option of “strobing” (or strobe only) and that I can clip on to the back of his collar, rather than one that’ll hang down underneath/in front of him, where it’s going to be much less visible.

While I’m at it, any recommendations for “bungee” type leads? I’m not sure what the proper term is, but the ones that look like they have an elastic aged, concertina section, so if Jussi pulls suddenly, he’s less likely to yank my GF or me off our feet.

Picture, just because.

I got a collar last year from Lidl of all places. It has a big yellow band around it that is reflective but also has a series of LEDs within the collar that can either be static or flash. It's rechargeable as well.

From memory it was less than a tenner. I was worried about the quality but it's lasted well.

Your message reminds me that I must give it a charge

I seen these in Decathlon a few months ago and thought for the price I'd buy a couple and try them on our cocker spaniel. And they are brilliant.

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/flashing-light-id_8394...

I have one clipped onto his collar on the back of his neck. The clip is really strong and stiff, once on it's not really going anywhere. I was surprised at its brightness, the red strobing effect is great. It weighs nothing as well.

And it says its waterproof. Ours has been in the rain, but not yet fully submersed.

we use these for our dogs, clip on/off easily and really work well even in the middle of keldy forest in the pitch black.

We use the Orbiloc on our idiot, main criteria being a) secure and b) watertight. Latter vital as in any less clement weather any walk is a join the dots exercise where the dots are puddles, the muddier the better. The idiot has two collars, one with the Orbiloc on for night walks, it's bright, blue, continuous or strobe.

Downsides, our idiot is a hairy monster, (Golden) so sometimes it gets buried in the fur, but you can still see it at a distance on dark nights. You wouldn't have that issue with Jussi.

Due to that we also have a collar made up from part of an IKEA retroreflective tabard, which sits on top of his neck fur and catches torch light very well at a distance when he is off racing about the common looking for rabbits and squirrels to chase plus any random chavellers to put the fear of God into. Clearly he is a fan of the film Snatch, if could talk his favourite phrase after what's for dinner would be "I f*****g hate chavellers"

Second downside, after a while the batteries run down, obviously, though they do last well, in theory you can buy a service kit (expensive) consisting of new battery pack and sealing ring. We did that once then it became unavailable. The batteries themselves CR2032 iirc, the difficulty is that it takes two which are held together by a plastic shrink tube. I bodged my own up using a narrow strip of self amalgamating tape.

Hi Dibble

We have used Ezydog leads https://www.ezydog.co.uk/, which have the bungee element you describe.

We used to use their harnesses as well, but no need nowadays as they walk happily by our sides.

I presume this means you are now up and about and that is great news. Your sense of humour during your recovery has been inspirational.

Good luck

Forgot, shock absorbing dog lead.

We have a Flexi extendable with a shock absorbing accessory attachment on the end. Looking at Flexi site can't find that accessory now but there are other types available that just clip on.

Normal lead, EzyDog Zero Shock, keeps him organised and under control when he goes to the vets and gets all excited about all the tickles from the staff. Also has a loop near the fastener for traffic control.

I ordered little aluminium bullet type ones from AliExpress. Got a whole load for not much money, so I can just clip another one on when they inevitably get lost. They're plenty bright enough and last ages.

This type:

Also available quicker but at higher price from Amazon and eBay:

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I tried to order a couple of those cheapie Decathlon ones online, but for some reason, it sends their webpage into a tizz from my iPad, so no joy there. It looks like I’ll be treating him to some Orbiloc stuff! I definitely don’t want a “dangly” one as when he’s off the lead in the dark, he’ll be head down, sniffing away, so it won’t be easy to see that type.

The Ezy shock extender looks just the job. I’ve plenty of leads for him (there’s normally a couple in the flat and one or two (semi) permanently in my car and my GF’s car (as well as a load of poo bags, Kong, squeaky pig, bowl, water...). Off to Amazon I go!

I’m not quite up and about yet, not properly anyway. I had all the metal out of my leg just over three weeks ago, which is great, but the slight downside is I’m back to “toe touch” weight bearing on my duff leg for at least six weeks, which means no driving and hopping about everywhere and still on crutches (the biggest pain with that is not being able to carry anything liquid, such as a brew or a pint, or even a plate of of food, so in the flat, I have an old lady trolley I load up and push around!). I’m planning ahead for a change for when I am up and about and can get back out to walking with him.

I’ve also just wasted spent a very useful couple of hours “researching” torches online, including watching a few YouTube video reviews, which seem to consist mainly of Americans and lots of “EDC” type nonsense. I daren’t count the number of torches I already own and I bought another cheaply from Amazon this week, but like a lot of things, the ideal number to own is n+1 (where n is the number currently/already owned).

A thread update. I spent £20 on an Orbiloc. Then another fiver on the clip, as the elastic things didn’t work great attaching them light to The Idiot’s collar.

Then, a couple of days later, by sheer chance, I got an email from AlpKit, about torches. Rather than just deleting it, I had a look. And of course, that’s where I’d previously seen the cheapo lights, two for £6.99 with £2.49 P&P, so I ordered a couple of packs, which arrived today. They were pretty easy to get onto his collar, which because it’s quite “thick”, I just needed a bit of a tease on with the end of a table knife.

These are the lights: https://www.alpkit.com/products/blip

And this is a very quick iPhone video of them. I’ll try and get a better look tonight when it’s dark, so you can see how good they are. For the money, I’d definitely recommend them. https://youtu.be/-IDqAjC1os0

I did order one of the Ezy lead extensions, which seems to be helping my GF retain her shoulder joints inside their respective sockets, which she seems quite keen on.

They come in two sizes, that was the 25mm/1” ones I got for the collar. Cheap as chips and seem to be pretty bright.
