We've had them for a few years but this year they are a plague. Covering a quarter acre of garden and making a huge mess of the lawn. The soil is quite sandy which I've read is the attraction. I can't use a canister of spray or hot water as there are thousands of the beggars. Backpack spray and wand of? I'd rather not kill them off but it's got out of hand.

As an aside they appear first week of September which is odd. One would think they'd turn up in Spring/early summer. There can't be much pollen about this time of year. TIA

I'd google "pest bees council" and look for local authority. Some offer a service themselves, others advice.

Well there's the trouble, ordinary mining bees are fine, but those ones are fking unionised.

I can tell you for free your troubles are just beginning, just wait till the union of mining bees take industrial action.

Guarantee the bees will demand shorter flowers and more honey.

I'd feel a bit of a git killing bees off, but I can see they're a bit excessive. Can you top dress the lawn with some peat/compost/manure in the winter to make it a bit less sandy?

The council won't advise unless they are Wasps. If I top dress it won't stop this years batch hatching and laying their eggs in the same spot. Rentokil advise to rotate the lawn to expose the eggs. It's a ball ache because it's a very big area so the lawn is ruined either way.

I think modifying the ground to make it less favourable to them would be a long term project anyway, to be honest.

I think you're right. Stripping 1500M2 of lawn, new soil and turf will hurt
