One year and one day to the day we lost our oldest boy, our oldest girl left us this morning. She had her breakfast and wandered out into the garden for her normal pit stop, I saw her have a roll on the grass, then went out a minute later and she was gone. I am of course grateful she didn't suffer (nor did our boy) and I know she had a happy life but I would have liked more time with her.

I don't like this time of year anymore.

I am so sorry to read this. Such mixed emotions no suffering but a real shock especially if not been poorly before.

Thoughts to you.

Are you meaning the loss of humans or animals ?

I feel for you. it takes me back a few months to a Saturday morning in April . Circa 7.30, I heard a loud bang down stairs and a doggy cry of pain. I went down to find my little lass ( Wheaten Cairn ) flat out in her bed and the bed soaking wet with pee. She could not stand up-her rear end had gone. Vet told us that treatment would involve weeks/months of treatment, possibly a lot of ops. But Shona couldn't handle anaesthesia. And in the meantime, Shona would be unable to go out and pee. No choice- I'd loose her, but she'd be out any pain and lack of dignity. I told vet to PTS.
But hold up- as I found, a few months later ,looking for a breed rescue. Out of the corner of a cage shot a little lady. Looked at us and shot back in again. We met her, and she decided that we wee her chosen owners. She now sleeps on our bed ( something our last two never go to do ,as SWIMBO allows it), gets Swimbo prepared meals ( mince /scrambled egg mixed with Wainrights Turky and rice) and treat galore. OH-Lexi has had a nasty past life- on walks ,if anyone gets near, she runs-to one of us. Lok for a dog like Lexi and give it a good home.

Little bit harder today as she didn't rush down the hallway to get into the kitchen first for her breakfast and I filled up her utility room water bowl knowing she wouldn't be drinking it after her breakfast. Her daughter also went out into the garden and was sniffing where she was yesterday which made me feel terrible. But I know this pain will lesson in time.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, yes going swiftly and without pain is something that I am very grateful for.

So so sad.

I have never had a dog, my folks did and are aware of the pain, so never let me have one as a kid as they were so impacted by their irish setters death . I look after my SiL/bros's cocker a lot though and shes getting on. im dreading that day as although shes not mine and i dont see her every day i know i will be in bits as will my folks who also look after her at times. i take solace that when shes here i try to give her the best time i can.

stay strong.

please no one post the comic strip as that always gets me and i cant not read it.

I feel your pain.

We lost our first dog, a Boxer called Bengal (tiger striped brindle) on September 12th 2017 at approximately 1pm. He would have been 10 on Christmas Day that year.

It was sudden and we had to have him put to sleep, my wife still cries almost 2 years later and I have the occasional tear even now.

We ended up getting another Boxer far earlier than planned, as after a week or two I contacted the family we had got Bengal from to let them know he had died, after the customary commiserations he mentioned that his daughter's bh had recently had a litter.

It turned out the bh was the granddaughter of Bengal's Mum's sister, so there is a tenuous family link. The most crazy bit though is that it turned out that the litter was born on September the 12th and our pup was born approximately 3hrs after we had lost Bengal.

They said that the vet had indicated that there would be 5 puppies and they ended up with 6.

For obvious reasons we called him Phoenix :-) it did help, but Bengal is still my phone screensaver, almost 2yrs on. I would feel disloyal to change it, if that makes sense.

Time does help, but not as much as I had hoped it would.

Take note- In April I had to do the deed all pet owners dread. My little lady had lost all sensation in both legs. So I did what any responsible owner would do . But out there is another dog with your name on their mind.Might be strange, but the dog departed sends them to you. I've been to kennels and returned a few months later with a littl lady looking for love. But this little lady is so much like the one that left us a few months ago.
Coincidence ,or what?
