Hi all,

I'm picking up a GSD puppy in a couple of weeks and I'd love some advice on how to introduce him to our cat. Our cat is quite stubborn and we hope that the dog doesn't make him scared to come home. I've thought about keeping them apart but within sight of each other for a couple of days and making the cat stay in (he's in most of the time anyway), but there is conflicting advice about this online.

Any experience?

Years ago we had a rescue collie x(Purdy) that we were told was ok with other animals ,however she hated our cat(Bob) with a vengeance. We tried various suggested method from dog behaviorists.
What worked was a large cage in the living room which we put Bob in every time he came in the house and Kong's filled with food to distract Purdy .This went on for months maybe even 6 months, she got slowly better but it was a pain in the posterior, one day i'd had enough and put Purdy in the cage and let Bob roam free, within a week Purdy calmed down so we let her out but on a lead, within two weeks they were sleeping together.

A friend of mine had cats then got a dog, they got on together in a so-so fashion. Then they got another dog and after a while the cat moved out.
They found it a few weeks later living with someone else a few streets away and brought it home, it lasted a day or so then went back so they had to leave it there as everyone was happy with that.

Not helping here am I? biggrin
