This guy was found upside down on the floor where I work this morning (in a factory) and no one else would go near it, so I gently scooped it into the container, took it outside and deposited it on the nearby grass. It was still moving it’s legs, but other than that wasn’t doing much, so not sure if it survived.

It was the first time I’ve managed to get this close to a dragonfly and the size and colours of it were amazing. Google tells me it’s a southern hawker dragonfly.

er... why?

Magnificent creatures, one visited my new pond yesterday, so hopefully we'll get some lava in the mud.

BTW the pond has only been in commission since late May, is quite small, but is already teeming with wildlife. Remarkable and wonderful.

Not really sure, they seemed scared of it and thought it would sting or something. There was quite a crowd while I picked it up. I was more worried about damaging it.

Thought so. It's shame isn't it, the ignorance about such wonderful creatures. Plenty would have thwacked it. frown

The poor thing was in a high traffic area, so if I’d left it it most certainly would have got squashed or trodden on. The reaction to it was really quite disappointing.

I had one get in the house the other day, was huge! making a right racket bumping into walls and the ceiling!

must have had a 10cm+ wingspan, took a while to get it back outside as I didn't want to risk trapping it and damaging its wings.

Amazing creatures tho. We used to find the discarded skins of the nymphs in my Dad's pond when I was little, took them to school to scare other kids with biggrin

Fascinating things to watch - you can quite often see them flying a repetitive patrol pattern over the garden, they seem to turn at the exact same spot each time and carry on along a pre-determined flight path.
Also saw one intercept a wasp mid-air when we were in Spain, and crash land onto one of the loungers by the pool. Wasp was not long for this world laugh

Beautiful things. They are however considered a delicacy by our cat who has been known to leap several feet into the air to grab one and eat it, she always spits the wings out though!
