Slowly having to face up to the fact that our 15 year old Golden Retriever won't be with us much longer.
Shes happy enough but doesn't like going up or down steps to the garden any more (ligaments), sleeps most of the day but loves just lying on the deck in the sun being brushed. Once up she will plod around the garden etc, its the getting up and down thats the problem.
Her knees are obviously causing her pain, she was on a glucosamine tablet but it didn't really do anything.
Is there anything we can give her that will help straight away rather than i months (which she may not last)?

Thanks all. Shes not up to being dragged to the vets so home visit booked for tomorrow.
Unfortunately we don't have enormous faith in the vet she is now with (changed hands) as they seem very focused on flogging you stuff. Last time she saw them we ended up with £250 of "special diet food" and glucosomine liquid which did nothing for her.
We do have a mobile vets number who is recommended and there is another local vet but they need to book home visits some time in advance as I'd rather she had something sooner rather than later.

good luck with home visit. BUT- bear in mind that one day ( as I found out a month or two ago) you may have to decide between your love for your pet and it's quality of life. IT IS NOT AN EASY CHOICE. Be guided by your pet. I take solace from the last look Shona gave me before she passed on. It said "thank you".
Many thanks for the suggestions and advice. Vet came out and checked her over, apparently apart from the arthritis shes in pretty good health so prescribed Loxicom which shes now been on for 48 hours, today is day 3.
Literally within 4-5 hours she was moving around more, next day she got herself up and down the steps to the garden and was noticeably more sprightly.
This morning she was awake and up barking in the kitchen to go out at 7am (not done that for a couple of months), straight out then back in for biscuits then back out again to sit under the bird table to catch anything the birds throw off it.
Definitely a much happier dog.

See, we're not all out to take your money for no reason. Good result.Literally within 4-5 hours she was moving around more, next day she got herself up and down the steps to the garden and was noticeably more sprightly.

And many thanks for your advice. Today she is literally like a new dog. Okay, she won't go on forever but shes happily up and down the steps to the garden, didn't crap all over the lounge last night and is harassing me at lunch for bits of pate and cheese. If it keeps her happy for another summer she'll have had an amazing life for a dog.
That really is brilliant news. It's so good when your friends get better, it's good when they are your patients but so much better when they are your family. Thought my new rottie had bust a cruciate recently, but he's not broken anymore, lovely feeling.....even if he is a hooligan again.
