Hi all - need some advice from the collective.

Am looking to get a Sphynx cat.
Have always wanted one, and now my job has me working from home I thought I'd take the opportunity, so have been looking around at breeders (note I am in the Netherlands not the UK).

Came across a breeder here and contacted her as she has a stunning seal-point Sphynx for sale. My only worry is that the cat is coming from a breeder in the Ukraine (a family member from the lady here in NL). She says the cat will be vaccinated, chipped and come with an NL pet passport.

A quick Google and there seems to be many Sphynx breeders in Ukraine.
Has anyone else gone this route ??
Anything I should be aware of ??

Thanks in advance

I've no idea on the cat you want but i can give you a contact from that region a very trusted friend who would transport the cat and maybe even find one for you. Husband and wife who transport show dogs around Europe once a month.

It can be very nerve wracking buying from someone you do not know thousands of miles away.

Email me if interested.

Thanks for the kind offer !
I'll see how it goes with the breeder I'm talking to here. Going to see the kitten on the 25th so hopefully all is well

Thanks again

Not with available kittens no. This is a lady who lives in NL but is Ukrainian and has cat breeding contacts there.

I bought my Sphynx cat through Woozles in Essex, she put me on to a family that breed from her cat, mine is 5th generation and cost me around a grand. Have you had dealings with these cats before. ?? they are super friendly and very very loving. I had problems finding a Cattery and a Vet as both were not sure if there insurances covered the breed.
Indy is currently not helping me type this out, he keeps nudging me.
They have ferocious appitites and eat way more than other cats, mine loves chicken sausages and pepperami sticks. No matter what you feed them the huge amount of st they leave in the tray is that in size of a small human..

Jan Plumb tel 01202-475105. This woman is who you need to speak too, she and her friend where the first to bring the Sphynx cat to the UK. she can direct you to the correct breeder that would help you. Like all high end goods people see it as a way to earn a quick buck, at a house i visited i saw a Sphynx cat that had a a very hairy tail, this is caused by out breeding to the wrong cat. That was a £750 cross breed,i was given the details yo the lady that she got her cat from and i went to see the new kittens this woman had, the house was a stinking st hole , i couldnt see the parents and the kittens hid as soon as they entered the room, not good. I reported her to the lady who owns Woozles to see if she could chat to her.
If i was you id wait for a local kitten to pop up or look to the uk, lots are very established breeders.
If i get another cat itll be a Peterbald Sphynx, they have the face of the oriental cat, very pretty.

Hi GTIdriver

Thanks for the great picture and advice.

Have spent time around a friend that had one but no - I have not had specific long term experience as an owner with the Sphynx - but am aware of and prepared for the challenges particularly around skin care.
I did have a long haired Blue years ago that had a skin condition that mean't weekly baths in special shampoo and brushing. He hated it and I still have the scars on my arms to prove it ! smile

I had not read about their appetites (or produce from their appetites ! biggrin ) - good to know. I prefer to feed dry food mostly with the occasional chicken or salmon treat when I cook it.

I'll keep looking around and also take a look at the place in Essex you mentioned - my parents live in Suffolk so not too far away.

Many thanks again

No. I was in the US on a 3 day business trip and the person importing the cat from Ukraine had sold it to someone else by the time I got home (I was actually in the air when she mailed me)

Was obviously not the right cat for me. Am in no rush so will wait until until the right one.
