Hi all,

Meet Alfred my new Rottie pup, he's 4 months old now:

Last couple of days we have noticed an issue with his eye, it came and then went away and then came back again over course of 2 days... Am I going to the VET??

Any advice from anyone who has seen similar would be appreciated before we book him in.

He seems fine in himself.

Thanks

Difficult to tell from the picture but looks like a small prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid, "cherry eye".

Go to the vet, will likely need surgery.

Thanks mate.

Did a bit more research and definitely Cherry Eye. Hadn’t come across it in my previous dog.

Have managed to massage it back in very slowly and lightly and been giving him some eye drops so keeping an eye on it now. If it repeats then its a Vet visit

Nothing helpful to add other than speedy recovery to Alfred.

He is so cute I just want to cuddle him.

I love Rotties grew up with one, Rocky. I still think about him to this day

Thanks! He's a cool dog and gets a lot of attention when he is out which he deals with really well.

Soooooo. It's an OP on Monday for Alfred to tie the gland back in, apparently only 65-70& success rate.

The other option is to remove it but that can lead to dry eyes and the need for daily drops....

Going to be a nervous day on Monday in our household for the little lad

Removing it is not an option in the 21st century, it produces the vast majority of the watery component of the tear film. Removing it will likely lead to a lifetime of eye problems, no vet should be offering this for a simple cherry eye.

The surgery is straight forward and only occasionally needs a 2nd correction, make sure he wears his buster collar.

Best of luck.

I can concur with jmsgld. Removal should not become an option. The vet doing the surgery should be competent to do the job and get it sorted first time but definitely a second time. I have been lucky to work with a vet who specialises in opthalmology and she definitely would never remove one, unless it was damaged beyond repair maybe.

Hopefully it will all be sorted out soon enough for the little man.
