hi we are in bucks, after a horrific attack on our small dog, he is very rarely off the lead, and not happy for other dogs to come running over to him, fine on an empty beach, or area with good visibility so we can see what other dogs are running loose. i am sure i have seen on here before that some places will rent a secure enclosed area for training and just generally being off the lead stress free, has any one done something similar, thank you

Rushmere County Park has a free secure (ish) fenced paddock which is often empty.

Lower Hortondale Kennels near Leighton Buzzard have secure paddocks that are available to rent - look under FAQ on the website.

I am sorry to hear about your dog, my little Dachshund has been attacked twice too its awful frown

These links should help, I rent my own secure field for all my guys and for training. Its great, but you might also get some help from a behaviourist to help your little guy recover from his ordeal so you can minimise his fear on seeing other dogs as well. The impact can be very long lasting frown x

thank you, it is a nightmare, everytime some ones dog comes running over, we try to tell them politely (mostly) to call their dog back, before our little dog tries to take their dog on.

looking at the behaviorist option as well

thanks once again

We rent a field near us for our boy to run at

He loves chasing a ball but, at the moment, cannot tolerate being around other dogs.

I would second a behaviorist - we are working with one at the moment. They can set you up with sessions with a stooge dog, where the environment can be controlled and the dog gradually trained to tolerate other dogs being around.

It is a long process to counter condition, you have to accept that fear memory is extremely deep and it is virtually impossible to erase the memory of fear or pain. However with patience and working at the dog's speed and within its own capacity you can achieve really good progress. Been there, got the t-shirt, the back catalogue and all the frikkin tour memorabilia smile

I really like Denise Fenzi's approach to training (train the dog in front of you). It is a helpful perspective with all dogs, not just the special ones smile x
