I was at a gig in Newcastle recently, and on the way back to hotel just after midnight (quiet street next to a tributary of the Tyne) we heard this very loud and striking birdsong.

Probably 2 or 3 birds it seemed, and we also saw one bird perched on a ledge a few metres away overlooking wasteground chirping away.

OH thought it was a nightingale (not a bird I have knowingly identified by sound before), but on subsequent research it seems the following birds can also sing at night:

Robin
Blackbird
Thrush

From what I could see, it looked far more like a nightingale than any of the other possibilities, but according to the RSPB, nightingales don't come this far north.

Any birdsong experts that can advise?

Video is more for the sound as taken with a smartphone in poor light, and you will need to turn volume up, but clear enough if you do.

Robin :-) God knows how they catch up on sleep during the day.

^ Your correct. I only listened to a part of the clip. I have a song thrush here who sings from 7.00 am every morning. Noisey bugger but I like him.

and everyone knows that nightingales only sing in Berkley Square!

..let me guess you were in the Ouseburn Valley and your gig was at The Cluny?

I walked out of a cinema in South Birmingham last week to hear a bird in a nearby tree. No other birds were responding though!
It was about 10.30pm. I know my birds but couldn't make it out but it was definitely finch/tit/robin size.

10 out of 10 smile

We'd only just left the Cluny when we could hear something, and 150 yards away with no-one else around the song was very striking - I am used to blackbirds singing in built up areas around dusk and early morning, but never heard anything as late as this, nor as strong.

It was also surprising how close we were able to get to it. Didn't seem remotely bothered.

Often hear birdsong, but last night around 10 I heard what sounded like geese,. I thought they should be roosting at that time.
