I’m posting on behalf of a friend. Their 15 year old Collie/Lab cross has been rather unwell recently. There are times where Ella is both throwing up and passing diahorrea throughout the night, whereas other days she is fine and happy!

My friend has been to the vets and the diagnosis is gastroenteritis. However initial thoughts were chronic kidney failure.

This happened yesterday (I wouldn’t open if you’re eating!) ...

Does anyone know what the red bits are? Blood? Is it sick with mucus? Is this likely to be linked to gastroenteritis or chronic kidney failure? Any help is much appreciated!

My wife of 13 years is a vet and although that does not make me one, I have heard enough stories over the years to take a good stab at a guess.

Seems to me like the dog has eaten something and it has blocked her somewhere. Tell your friend to take her back to the vets ASAP for an examination. Gastroenteritis, this is not.

Message from Ella's owners:

"Might just leave it for now and see how Ella gets on. No sickness or diarrhea escaping from any orifice at the moment !

You could say she is improving & thanks for everyones advice."

Thanks all! smile

The source of the problem is utterly inapparent from the pics and thread, sorry. Hope that it's a passing problem with no serious consequences.
