What pets for new home

I'm going to be moving in with the other half next year (hopefully!) buying our own place. We both love animals. We know that dogs won't be suitable for us as she works Monday to Friday 0900 - 1800 and I'll be doing shifts with nights. To fair away to pop home during the day as well.
I love cats. So I think that will be on the cards some when. Most likely a recuse or two. However, is there anything else that someone else can think of that would make a good pet that can be left alone during the day? I'm thinking of some fish some when, as I've never really had the chance to get a decent sized fish tank going.
