This video from the RSPCA of someone leaving a dog on a street has been shared all over the press and social media on Christmas Eve with a lot of people, the RSPCA included, condemning the man for being heartless.

It's certainly hard to watch, mainly because the dog obviously cares for the man leaving it. A mistreated fighting dog not caring about being booted out of a car and left wouldn't have had the same visual impact for a heart rending Christmas Eve story.

What annoys me about this though is that when a neighbour found two abandoned kittens she was going to a family funeral a few days later, so couldn't keep them. She rang round all the local animal shelters, two RSPCA ones included, and they all declined to take them because they were full. We looked after them and she ended up keeping them, but without our help she could have been forced to put them outside to fend for themselves.

When a stray dog gave birth to puppies in my grandparents' garden the RSPCA refused to help and the police ended up taking them in. A police officer even called round to say when all the puppies had been found homes.

A lady at an animal shelter said there has been a huge increase recently in people having to give up animals because they've lost their accommodation through job losses, landlords increasing their prices or selling the properties they rent. The only new accommodation they've been able to find has been somewhere that won't take the pets.

Whoever abandoned the cats where I live left them in woods because their main priority was not being seen, not the welfare of the cats. They were probably cat breeders wanting rid of two kittens that had got past the tiny, cutsie stage where they were easy to sell. This guy has made an effort to ensure the dog is found and is all right until it is by leaving it with its bed by a CCTV camera, possibly outside an RSPCA shelter.

I think this story has more to it than is being shared, not least exactly where the dog was abandoned and where the CCTV camera is mounted, and I think people are being a bit too quick to judge the guy. The RSPCA is keen to trace him, most likely to put its resources into legal proceedings against him.

Seen the video, and understand that if you are turned away by rspca and are at your wits end, not everyone can do the right thing.

Obviously like having children, you should think of that at the time you get the pet, but life doesn't always work out like that.
