I’m without a dog at the moment too and will be getting two in the new year if things go according to plan.
I’m going to get mine from a rescue place and a Dachshund is high on the want list for one of the two. Little dogs with bags of personality, what’s not to like?
They can't get on the sofa, go upstairs or do big poos. So not much. That's not to say I will cave in and get one, but they have a lot going for them.I’m going to get mine from a rescue place and a Dachshund is high on the want list for one of the two. Not much, when they look like this working "teckel"I’m going to get mine from a rescue place and a Dachshund is high on the want list for one of the two. Little dogs with bags of personality, what’s not to like?
but (IMO, of course) quite a lot when they have the show dogs' exaggerated long back and short leg proportions

Poor breeding appears to be a risk with these.
It's excellent breeding according to The Kennel Club.Compare the KC's portrait of the current Crufts champion with the working dog >>> https://www.dogimages.org.uk/crufts-2018/2018-best...
My gran and step mum have between them various variants of Dachsund. (small, large, wirehaired, long haired).
I'd not have one, for the various health issues (backs are a very weak design fault) and they are bred to be noisy buggers so they bark at anything they think is interesting. And I have found they aren't keen on walking very far due to short legs.
And yes they are very much on trend right now, especially the toy versions because they do look cute and have lots of "character".

I have always liked these, just seem like great characters and very cute too.
Big characters. We’ve got 2 (I’ll upload pics later) and would hate to be without them... but probably wouldn’t have another because of the IVDD problems. Our lad has just had an op (best part of £5k) and reading up on the IVDD site for Dachshund’s it affects about 1 in 5 dogs. He’s only 5yr old and was fit as a fiddle one day and the next walking like he was pissed. Ours do jump up on furniture and go all around the house, in the beds etc and it’s difficult to stop them doing this (our fault) but weirdly I read on the internet that dogs that are allowed to jump, go on furniture etc are less likely to suffer IVDD! So, great dogs, huge character, love them to bits, but they are expensive to run. Oh, and you will look gay walking down the street with one
