Oriental/Exotic kitten ..ownership & safety concerns?

Hi guys....Myself and the wife and two kids are ready to venture into the realms of kitten ownership again.
Long story short,we lost our current cat last January from old age a lovely 21 year old tabby girl that we'd owned from a kitten.
Looks like the new year will also bring a new cat and i've always had a soft spot for an exotic breed...predominantly Siamese or Russian Blue kittens seem to be the favourite.
I'm not keen on having just a house cat as the previous cat had the run of the house,garden and surrounding area...but i'm also aware that a more exotic cat would be desirable to opportunistic thieves.
Can anyone give me an insight to these more exotic kittens and behavioural traits and do you take more precautions letting them out?
