2 year old male cat Stan, has been diagnosed with cystitis, and a urine sample has shown the presence of crystals in his bladder.

Poor thing has had an episode of being unhappy and weeing in the house, something he's never done before. Spots of blood or dark coloured wee.

This is what prompted me to take him to the vet.

He was given medicine and pills to take and now the urine result is positive.

Vet is saying to book another appointment and that they will supply his special dietary food..........for life.

Of course at great cost.

(Long story that I don't want to get into but the ex wife stopped the pet insurance payments about 9 months ago as the premium for 3 cats in London was going through the roof)

Anyone had a similar problem with a male cat? and surely there is good food we can get for him with out going through the vet.

Far the past week he has been on wet food only, orders from vet, but the greedy bugger then goes and steals the other cat's dry food as well.

If it was a dog I would say just give some cranberry juice but I don't know if a cat can cope with it. Bex will hopefully be along shortly.

Similar problem with our female cat when fed dry food. Several bouts of cystitis.
On vet's advice she now gets a combination of dry food & half a small can of wet food in roughly equal proportions twice daily. No problems since.

Does your cat drink? We noticed with our male that he didn't like drinking from bowls containing static water & used to drink from a running tap although no medical issues.
Bought one of these & he uses it. He's also on the same diet as his sister

Late ETA. Only downside with that fountain is that due to the angle he holds his head when drinking at some of the water ends up on the floor which if you had a carpet type floor covering - ours is tiled - might be a problem.
His sister laps out of the bowl area at the bottom so isn't a problem!
