Once a month or so we come down to a mess left by our 15 month old female cockapoo; this morning was one of those mornings and despite having wipe-clean flooring it's incredibly unpleasant! Mrs. Scruff was in tears this morning, not a good way to start a Friday.

We're creatures of habit in our house so the routine is always the same - 3 walks a day, first one just after breakfast about 5:45 and the last one after dinner about 17:00. We then take her up and down the road about 21:00, then a final visit to the back garden before shutting down for the night between 21:30 and 22:00.

Any suggestions as to what more we can do in order to reduce the risk? No idea what prompts it and part of the idea of such a routine is to encourage her to go outside and not in.

If its once a month and the floors wipe clean. I would suggest you don't make a fuss and your wife dries her tears. Its only a bit of poo and "st happens"

If you make a big thing of it. The dog may get distressed and eat it to hide the evidence and if that becomes a habit, you will have something to worry about.

Praise and / or reward all outdoor messing.
Ignore all indoor messing (apart from cleaning it up!)

Hopefully, the dog will get the message.

Our Cockerpoo x did this twice recently close together. The dates not the poos. Turns out this was in the run up to her coming into season.

That's pretty much what we've done (positive reinforcement and all that), and she's often inclined to eat her own poo anyway.

She's been spayed so shouldn't be coming into season, just all a little odd. Oh well.

Our year old black lab does this occasionally. However we can usually attribute to something like being woken up but something outside or us in the middle of the night. Or knowing our lab something she has eaten when for a walk which doesn't agree with her. It is a nightmare and stinks the house out, but we just put it down to one of those things having an animal.

You don't say whether it is a normal firm stool she is passing or not.

I am assuming not because you say it is extremely unpleasant. Well normal faeces is not that unpleasant to pick up an get rid of!

If it is not normal then there could be a stress related link or a dietary indiscretion causing it.

Mrs Scruff should man up, it's just a bit of poo ffs. Get yourself a real woman or clean up yourself.

My Cocker had the same issue, everything from solid to liquid. Some dogs just take longer to be able to "hold" it in, but she is fine now.
Patience is a virtue.

Oh and sort the wife out, she won't be helping with the dog improving.

We have 3 dogs, occasionally the odd poo is found in the morning, it is cleared up and forgotten about.

Why would it make your wife cry, also her stressing over it will just be projected onto your dog, potentially making the situation worse.

Do you feed her in the evenings? If it's a bit late you could try feeding her a little earlier in the hope that she 'does her business' during her last walk/letting out of the day.

Our Yorkie Poo was a bit random for a while, just need to keep at it and they eventually get it.

Though one night last year, despite being let out minutes earlier and due his walk, wandered in and did a massive piss in front of us biggrin bloody furry freak.

Not done it since, could see in his demeanour he just forgot, he realised when we shouted and looked mortified.
