Jack's Rake - The lake District
Discussion
I wasn't sure where to put this so it's in here...
I'm planning on doing this walk in a few weeks time, we have a small (7-8kg) Patterdale Terrier - is she going to be able to get up it?? She's done loads of big walks (Helvellyn for example) but if there are big rocks we have to climb over, she might be a bit little to make it!

Many years ago, 1989 I think, I took a wrong turn with my pal Hoover a 30 kg lab and headed down Jack's Rake..... Had to carry her under one arm for a bit, but got down ok. Think going up would have been easier, but a patterdale should fit in your pocket. If you and the dog are good on the hills, then it's not a problem but how good are your hands and how confident is your dog of you.
HTH what a dog Hoover was, my first canine friend.

I did Jack's Rake forty odd years ago, it's pretty tough but obviously without a dog.
Actually, I walked up Harrison Stickle last month, some pics here including Pavey Ark on the left. (Third picture)
Harrison Stickle, (one of the Langdale Pikes), top centre, the days objective from the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel.....2404 ft.
From the summit, Great Gable, centre top, Scafell Pike, 3209ft extreme left at the top in the far distance.
Looking down on Stickle Tarn from near the summit of Harrison Stickle, Pavey Ark Rock face on the left, very popular with climbers.
The "lump" near the centre left of the picture is the "other" Langdale Pike, Pike 'o Stickle about half a mile away, an easy 30 minute walk, which we did, again with superb views of the Scafell massif.
Watch this and decide:-

should be no problem
Got to admit I'm slightly surprised by that. We have a place in Elterwater and I've been up Pavey Ark a number of times. I've seen numerous people end up off track and end up in very exposed locations, myself included as a youth. And the number of rescue helicopters buzzing around Stickle Tarn over the summer is scary. It's much more dangerous than people think. We do hill walks with our dog, he's done Scafell Pike, Snowdon, and Ben Nevis without issue. Each to there own, but I wouldn't dream of taking him up Jack's Rake.
..Jack's Rake is (IMO) less intimidating than Sharp Edge as on JR you are 'contained' after a fashion in the gulley whereas on Sharp Edge you really are exposed on both sides and in real danger of falling.
With a small terrier it's not a problem as if they struggle you can always give them a help by the scruff. The Collie in the group did struggle on JR mind!
Far more difficult is a scramble up sour Milk Gill onto Red Pike - there's a section where we had to rope the big dogs and throw the terriers a good 8 feet or so - all good fun though and the terriers lap it up
