Howdy all.

We have a 4mth old cavapoo. We've been feeding her Pedigree puppy food, simply because the breeder gave us 2 bags. But we've been advised that's it's not great, and to try Taste of the Wild instead. Now, prices:

Pedigree £2.70/kg
James Wellbeloved £5/kg
Taste the Wild £7.50/kg

Now, I've no doubt the Taste the Wild stuff is better, but 3 times the price better?

I'm happy to buy it, if it's worth it, as she doesn't exactly eat alot, but don't want to be mugged off either.

The best dry food Money can buy is Origen or Aatu which is about £6 a kg.

Eden dog food is also highly rated but can give loose stools in some dogs.

Markus Muhle is probably the best value food you can buy in my opinion. Pure quality and £33 for 15kg.

Then if you want cheaper than that CSJ Champ is cheap whilst retaining some goodness.

I get my dog food delivered by tails.com

My dog loves it, has been eating it for years, and the vet recently said they'd never seen a fitter 13 year old dobbie; in fact she called another vet through to listen to her heart, it was that unbelievably healthy.

Stuff costs me around £45 per month.

We have a Schnoodle who is incredibly fussy over food (we also have a Jug, however she isn't fussy at all, which she proved this evening eating part of a rotten dead fish), all Pedigree stuff we tried her with she would only eat half of the RDA (if that!) before walking away and refusing to eat more (almost always tipping her bowl over or trying to) we then tried Royal Canin and although better she didn't seem herself still and the bowl tipping returned over time. Then we moved her to Wainwrights, the difference is night and day! She is much MUCH happier on it, eats the whole lot down without so much as a second thought, its made a huge difference to the dog she is, really pleased! We are 10 months in (much longer than the other two) and no bowl tipping or refusing to eat.

Rambled a bit there

TL:DR - Have a Schnoodle (and a Jug) and recommend Wainwrights!

We feed our German Pointer Wolf of the Wilderness and we get it from Zooplus like Pesty. Our springer we feed Millies. The only reason we do not feed our GSP Millies is that he was struggling to keep on weight and the one where he was able to keep weight on gave him bad wind.

I am not familiar with any of the brands you've mentioned but have you checked that they all recommend similar amounts per meal? Crap supermarket dog foods are so full of rubbish that you need to feed double, which makes £/kg comparisons more complicated.

We use Millies Wolfheart (Gundog mix) for Oscar who's a WHV. We switched him off Royal Canin which the breeder had him on as he would just turn his nose up at it.

This.

The dog food that our has, on the face of it looks expensive, however as it is such good quality, full of protein, no fillers, no crap etc they actually need less of it and it works out at a similar price to some of the more well know big brands whihc aren't that great.

Check out this website for dog food comparisons:

We use Millie's Wolfheart GameKeeper & Riverside mixes for our Staffy, and their advice on the phone has been amazing. It's £3.75/kg and comes in 3x4kg bags so it doesn't go off over time. I wish I knew about it with our previous Staffy (2005-2017) who had Bakers from the supermarket, but required portions twice the size for the same energy.
Before we knew about dog food; our first dog which we got about 16 years ago (died 5 years ago) was fed on Bakers, we'd just bung a handful in, in the morning and evening, no we are far more educated on it I am very anal about it.

Our GSD gets Taste of the Wild, it’s the only food that she doesn’t get bored of & ultimately turn her nose up to.

I buy it from Zooplus and as a member of their discount scheme, the code ‘stockup’ (or similar) plus a % or 2 from quidco I don’t find it unreasonable when buying 12kg bags. That said I haven’t looked at how much other brands would cost as I’m a bit soft!

We feed our lab James Wellbeloved Turkey and Rice mix and have done pretty much since we got her.

Why we chose that over a different brand I don't know... My other 1/2 is a vet so I'm not going to argue smile

I think the main thing was we wanted a single source protein as labs are susceptible developing allergies to some proteins.
Sticking to just Turkey means we could easily switch to a different protein source should problems develop.

Generally get it by the 15kg or 18kg bag from where ever is cheapest online at the time.

Yep; I didn't want to be the one to bring it up as sometimes us raw feeders can be seen as being like vegans; a bit shouty at how great it is.

However, the best thing we did was move to raw.

I have 25 dogs all on raw and they have never looked as good. Long as it is a balanced diet though, Muscle meat, protein etc.

Another bug bearer of mine on all feeds including raw if you buy from a shop etc is the recommended feed for age and weight etc. Feed by eye if they are to fat lower the amount and to skinny showing more than two rib up it.

I am always going to bring it up - hell I've stopped someone buying s**te kibble in the pet shop before now and got them onto raw..... The difference it makes to the health of the animals is well worth a few people being upset about it IMHO biggrin

Yep we always get favourable comments about ours from "they look great", to "really? she looks like a puppy" (soon to be 6 year old Frenchie), "they don't smell", "their coats are lovely and glossy", "the healthiest Frenchie that we have on our books" (the vet)

Ours are fed pre prepared frozen, yes I could probably do it cheaper myself but I can't be arsed and we don't have the space and approx £10 per week for three (small) dogs, isn't exactly breaking the bank.

Our, now 7 month old EBT started out on a mix of Wainwrights puppy food (dry) and their wet food too... Unfortunately had a stage of a really poorly tummy, and after two trips to the vet, they recommended we try him on raw..

He's not had a problem since, his coat is lovely and shiny, he doesn't smell doggy and best of all, his farts don't stink the house out any more... We have recently picked up another EBT puppy, who was fed raw from day one by the breeder, and he his on nothing but raw now - He his growing at a fair old rate, but not fat..

We have a local supplier of Nutriment, which is £28 for 12kgs and lasts the two of them a week or so.. Not cheap, but in our experience, so much better for them..
