Apologies for the rubbish picture, it was all I could get before he scarpered.

I imagine it's just a normal common spider, possibly a young one? but I've not seen one like this before. It was about the size of a 10p coin, perhaps slightly bigger

I've taken all the normal precautions of nuking the house from space just to be safe!

Aha, thanks. That definitely looks like it to me. I also noticed a couple of woodlouse in the kitchen on the weekend (which is unusual) so I guess he was after his dinner.
