One of our cats is curled up asleep on a giant bean bag a couple of metres away. A short while ago she woke up, meowed loudly and very purposefully a few times while looking straight at me, then settled down again. She's done this a couple of times before over the course of the last month or so. Should I get the vet to take a look at her or is this normal? We've had the cats for about six-and-a-half years so we're quite used to their quirks, but this is one I'm not familiar with.

How old is she? Does she have any moments of being a bit absent minded, extra vocalising during the day? Possibly very subtle changes in behaviour, not noticeable on their own.

She may have just been dreaming but if this is a new behaviour it is a bit odd. Any new noises in the house that could be disturbing her?

Both cats are about six-and-a-half years old. Both are very vocal - always have been. We're a bit daft and have talked to them a lot since Day 1 and they participate happily. This seems slightly unusual though. That said, we don't know how much she might do this as she's usually an outdoor cat. She's been spending more time indoors since we bought the aforementioned beanbag which she claimed immediately, so we see more of her these days. Both cats are very healthy - they go for an annual booster every year and the vet always remarks on their excellent condition.

I wouldn't worry too much but just be aware, she is still young and seems otherwise fine. Maybe just note when she does it, incase the frequencies increase or the way she does it becomes more severe. Or if you noticed any unusual behaviours with her in other situations. If ever you are able to record it should she do it again that would be useful for a vet but I realise that is tricky!

Otherwise continue as normal. I am not dismissing what you have posted because obviously it has got your attention enough that you wanted to post for advice and that is relevant so if you feel and appointment with a vet will reassure you then it would not be wrong but maybe see how things go over the next month.

The only final random thing is if the bean bag is a nylon type material it can give static shocks to them.

The bean bag is a thick cotton "Fat Boy" one with a heavy cotton throw over it to keep the cat hair off, so shouldn't be a static issue. The other cat is currently having a course of injections, the next being next Friday, so I'll mention it to the vet when we see him. Probably nothing to worry about though.

If it is a gobby cat it may just have decided to have a chat... or may have had a funny dream and woke up and yelled to see where she was..

Eating and toileting all ok?
