Say hello to Eric, we're collecting him tomorrow

born March 2012, so he's nearly 6.

Congrats, he's lovely, would be interested to hear how you get on with him. I have considered adopting a retired racing greyhound (is that where you got Eric?) as they are meant to be great pets for people who work all day as they sleep all but a few hours in the day anyway. I've always hesitated though as I want to be fair to any animal I own and so have never quite taken the plunge.

Welcome Eric (great name). Looking forward to hearing updates on how you are settling in smile

He reminds me of one of my greyhounds, Dylan. He was 6 when we adopted him, too.

patmahe - greyhounds can be great pets for people who work full-time - I've had them myself. But they will still need one or two breaks during the day to visit the garden and/or go for a walk. They shouldn't be left for 8-10 hours straight. My mum used to come and let my dogs out mid morning, then I had a dog walker come at lunchtime.

He's just like my mum and dads Grey, Queeny. She was adopted as Barley (boy Grey) sought out female attention whenever in kennels, then would be forlorn for days after being picked up. They're thick as thieves now.

What was his race name and did he win any races?

I work shifts and current rota has a lot of lates so I leave from mid-morning to 13.30 depending. My stepson gets home at about 1530 so he'll never be on his own for all that long

Currently liking the cold kitchen floor after his walk. I've gone to work.

He raced under Express Treasure and won 16 from 65 starts so not a roaring success! I'm going to try and source some podium photos if I can. The trust gave us a list of his races.

We worked and owned a ex racer. he was happy sleeping 10 hours a day whilst we went to work. However working owners, polarises opinions in the dog world, so careful where you tread and most kennels don't like it. Your alternative is £10an hour for a dog walker 5 days a week or doggy day care at an eye watering £40 per day.

Edit: Forgot to say congrats to the OP. Greyhounds are cracking dogs and you have a black one which is great as they are often overlooked in the kennels.

Miss ours everyday frown

We chose him for just that reason. He's been there quite a while.

My he is such a handsome fellow and with a personal best of 28.46 seconds over 480 metres he's no slouch. An average speed of 37.7 MPH oh and that includes bends, Usain Bolt doesn't make 28 MPH and that's going in a straight line over 100m.

His last 8 starts were mainly at 4/1 or 5/1 so you would probably have been up on the deal if you backed him.

We have had our girl for almost 2 years and she is a wonderful addition to our lives.

He got in his bed in the (XXL) cage about 1900 last night, barely stirred when I got in at midnight and appeared not to have left the bed at all until Mrs Pothole got up at 0730. He's done a lot of wandering about today and likes going in the garden, although he immediately goes and looks through the patio doors at his cage every time he goes out!

I'm taking him out for a walk for the first time later (first time for just me and him, that is) so we'll see how we get on.

Probabaly one of best rescue breeds to get for lead walking, as its been part of lives for a long time. Also being long dogs, they tend not to dart off to one side. Ours was a dream to walk unless he saw a squirrel, then there was a risk you'd end up with a disclocated shoulder. Rabbit meant you could just loose the arm completely biggrin

I still remember walk one. Very nervous and dog had a muzzel. We stopped using it after four weeks and if anything it made him more agitated. Don't believe the kennell talk of 'they are fine in muzzels'. Its not really true. Ours would just kee bashing it into your leg and really wasn't comfortable.

Crate training is useful though. Ours hated it and managed to break out the crate. Also a crate for a greyhound takes up a lot of space...

Some are absolutely fine with muzzles. All of mine who have worn them have been (greyhounds and lurchers). Until you know how they are likely to behave with cats and small dogs they might meet on walks, it's a sensible precaution.

We're on our 3rd & 4th hounds and all have coped with being left all day while at work. For the first week, they're been let out at lunchtimes, but soon adapted.

I've got a webcam but gave up checking on these two - the current boy regularly sleeps for 8 hours without even getting up, just wriggles a bit!.
I think his record was 18 hours without going outside - he refused to go out in the torrential rain.

Luckily our local rehoming kennels will advise which dogs they have that are suitable for people like us.

She's gorgeous! Eric hasn't shown any sign of being interested in that kind of behaviour yet, but we're hopeful

Good tail!

Ours also had a white tip for a while, but that was due to him whacking his tail against some freshly painted woodwork. Took a lot of scrubbing and some trimming with the scissors before it came off. Was quite funny at the time! biggrin

Snow White as well, our previous red lurcher had a white tip, can’t remember whether our Blue greyhound did
