We have an elderly dog with arthritis and I’ve found an American company that sells hemp based products for the relief of arthritis and pain in dogs and cats.
Although they are willing to ship items to me I am unable to find out if it would be illegal to import such products into the UK even though they are for animals.
Any help would be welcome.

Be careful. It won't be regulated if it is not a prescription medicine so you won't really know what you are receiving.
If it is a prescription only product then you must only order via a British website. If you order from a foreign one it will be you held accountable, not the company (plus much much higher chance of a fake product)
I will be honest I am not that familiar with the hemp product you mention. Why do you think it would be more beneficial, what is it meant to do?

Try some Joint Aid for dogs https://www.gwfnutrition.com/product/joint-aid-dog... we've found it really good for all of ours when they get a bit older - as have the people we've recommended it to. No affiliation. Can't say if it specifically helps with arthritis as none of ours have been diagnosed but it definitely makes a difference. It's been so good for ours, I wish they did something for humans!!
I vote for Catrophen as well. Our Golden Retriever is 10 and gets very stiff after exercise but a course of four injections, one per week, will see complete eradication of symptoms for 8 to 9 months. Some dogs react positively like ours but some don’t. If he hadn’t had injections we’d have to keep him on a lead, but as we are surrounded by arable land he can go run and run and run. Keeping him down to a sensible weight helps too. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Thanks for all your replies.
To import a 10 day supply of CBD oil capsules (sometimes called hemp oil) from the USA is £47 (inc shipping). I suspect there could be vat and import duty on top of that.
Given that there’s a chance that it may be impounded I’ve decided not to go down that route.
I haven’t heard of Cartrophen before so I’ll go and have a word with our local vet.

CBD oil can be bought here easily enough, via internet or health shops like Holland and Barratt. We are currently trying our dogs on it (one with turmeric added), it is fairly cheap at around a tenner a bottle and only give a few drops on there food.
Funny, someone mentioned cbd today for me (chronic and very painful Lower spine, hips etc). She said 'no nasty chemicals so it is safe' I did suggest everything is a chemical and natural does not automatically mean not harmful/safe. However I have been reading up on it. It is a bit controversial in the USA for use in animals. How did you find out about doses for your dog. Also how do you guarantee the quality of your product (natural can vary greatly in quality as no regulations for it). Meant to add also need to check it doesn't interact with other medicines that may be being given at the same time. Having said all that I am intrigued at the idea of its use (both for me and dogs/cats!) I just need to know more from good and trusted sources. I am also going to chat to my Dr about it once my MRI results are back.
I know a vet who uses natural remedies (our last whippet went to her for natural treatment)'s) so may well ask her about its benefits in dogs.
I also think everyone with arthritic dogs (and cats) should consider hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, massage and acupuncture for them. They can improve qol significantly and reduce the need for medical intervention (both natural and conservative)

I tried CBD oil for my rottiie who is crap on typical painkillers, got it easy from a dutch website......made no noticeable difference whatsoever to him. Disappointed but have him on gabapentin/tramadol now as he has a wrecked elbow, which keeps him happy enough with no upset stomach. Just one anecdote of cannabidiol.

We use Yumove tablets for our 14 year old Retriever. 1 a day after an intial high dose. That plus a once a fortnight hydro therapy session has massively helped her. Dont think its just for arthritis but it seems to working well
Same here, we've recently started our 9 y/o collie on them following advice from the vet and there has been a marked improvement in her flexibility and general level of comfort.Gassing Station | All Creatures Great & Small | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
