Our dog has got to the age where she's on daily drugs measured out with a syringe and put on her food once a day.

We've been rinsing out the syringe every fortnight when we've opened a new bottle but now have got a bottle that should last 4/5 months.

It got us wondering how often and what's the best way to wash out the syringe?

In a sink with hot water and let it dry naturally.

If you want to be really anal about it, put it in the dishwasher, it will sterilise it. But there's really no need.

Wot he said.

We have to dose ours three times a day with a syringe. My wife is/was an old school nurse, and I get a rollicking if I do it any other way.

cheers all, syringe will now be rinsed in hot water (no suds) after each use and dishwashered occasionally for belt and braces/overkill!

If you are referring to Metacam (or equivalent) there is a good chance your vets will have spare syringe or two that you could have it that helps.

Personally I just wash in very hot soapy water and rinse out thoroughly and dry on drainer (pull the syringe into two parts) depending a bit on the product being given. For Metacam I probably would sometimes just quickly rinse in hot water to remove the residue in the hub then every couple days do the more detailed clean.

The reason I would use soap is because products like Metacam contain ingredients that can cling to the syringe and not rinse off as well just with water.

Yes it is Metacam, and we've done 3 small bottles each if which came with a syringe and now gone for a BIG bottle so we do have a collection of syringes!
