Our 3 chickens are producing very thin shelled eggs that are out of shape and occasionally they just break under the bird in the nest boxes. They get a good mash (Vermix) as well as added grit and corn from time to time. Not so long ago on the same diet, I almost had to write the opposite post in that the shells were so bloody thick! So what's going on there then?

calcium deficiency - you can get either calcium tablets and give then one a day for a couple of weeks or add osteocare calcium supplement to the water for a couple of weeks , keep giving them fresh grit daily once they're back to normal

Also, you can bake the shells of their eggs in the oven, smash them up and recycle them into their feed. Worked a treat for our girls.

I did wonder whether it was that, I just don't know why there's a recent change. Does the temperature affect how they store calcium?
