hello all I am hoping that someone could give me some advice on my four year old akitas upset stomach normally if he has the trots it clears up on its own but not this time he is otherwise well I have tried withholding food been to the vet all checked out ok and was give some protexin this cleared up the problem for a couple of days but the problem has returned he is now on boiled chicken and brown rice but I don't hold out much hope as I have used this on my previous dogs with no success, thanks.

Well, old vet says starve dog until squits stop....easy said but I hate doing it to my boy when he looks so hungry, advise as much starvation as poss combined with protexin, get faeces test done for unusual bugs, mightneed antibiotics but that is becoming increasingly unfavourable, as is starvation therapy. If chicken and rice doesn't work for you then don't use it. If there is any abdominal discomfort associated with the diarrhoea then get some buscopan tablets from the chemist. Hope restricted diet solves the problem.

My GSD had this last month. Lasted 7-8 days in the end and at its peak was 10 "motions" a day!! Went from straight up chocolate milk to custard and then back again.

She is a working dog and was off work for a week which was not good.
Nothing we did would stop it, no food, bland food, rice water, milk of magnesia etc. Vet said its going round.

We got some meds in the end which did the trick. She had a small relapse about a week later but the vet had already told us that might happen and had issued extra meds, after the second dose it was sorted.

I will post the name of the meds later when I get home.

Salazopyrin was what the vet used and it started working pretty much within the first day.

salazopyrin is specifically indicated for colitis, characterised by loose stools, frank blood and mucus.....got some potential side effects, not what I would recommend for gastro enteritis first line.

Salazopyrin is not a commonly used drug anymore as it does have side effects, usually for recurrent colitis issues as The Vet has already said

I would recommend a months worth of a pre and or probiotics. Fortiflora is one make and protexin do a daily capsule called symbiotic dc.

Basically gut flora can be imbalanced for a long while and two/three days isn't enough to settle it.

And again, as already mentioned a full faecal analysis as well would be sensible.

If you can try sweet potato and fish instead of chicken and rice.

To be fair to the vet he said its a hammer to crack a walnut but she needed sorting pronto as she was not responding to anything else. It did the trick either way!
