We've recently bought a three piece Ekornes Stressless suite. Near £6000 new, handily bought in near new nick for a quarter of the price of Ebay.

When we're not around (or sometimes even when we are!) the 3 dogs like to get up on the sofa to snooze. How on earth can we stop this, as I'm quite keen for the stuff to not get wrecked.

A few details.

  • We've already bought them the comfiest memory foam beds we can find
  • We're trying putting boxes on them at night. Not really practical long term, as empty boxes lying around are a pain. This morning we came down to find one of them on the sofa having moved them anyway, he was told off
  • The layout downstairs means they can't be shut in another room at night.
Anyone any bright ideas?

I attempted to train my previous Lab to not get on the furniture, she was very good and did as was told/trained but only while I was not at home, she would stretch out on the sofa while home alone but as soon as she heard my vehicle pull up or key in the door if i walked would jump off and lay on the carpet with an innocent look on her face, good luck!

It will take a lot of training and be very difficult if it's established behaviour that you are now trying to change because of the new sofa.

If you can't lock them out of the room at night then you either need to provide a barrier to them getting on (which you are attempting to do, provide something more attractive or cage train them.

Yes, good luck does feel the sentiment!

The three little sts, I mean darlings....

Three different colours, so we can tell who the villein is by the fur left behind.

The only problem for us with crates is there size, especially as one of them would need a v large one.

I have half successfully trained our two not to get onto the furniture, when I am home (which can be a fair bit as I work there half the time) they do not even attempt to get on the sofa right up the point the wife returns home from work, then guess what happens?

In terms of keeping them off when you aren't there/at night trying penning them into an area using stairgates its what we do. They have a decent sized area and a crate they can make use of and we put a fresh bowl of water down and some toys, they love it in there as it is their area, they even go in voluntarily to hide from each other get some kip when one of them is being a knob! We use the step through type gates that you screw to the door frame to avoid continual tripping incidents!

EFA - I of course meant stairgates, not stargates hehe

Not these!

You can get mastiff sized ones - may be some on ebay.

Yes, I had a massive one for my late Dobe x Dane, as he'd 'go' in the night otherwise. I meant more as in where they'd be put when not in use due to the size.

Again, we'd do this, if there was a space which we could cordon off.

I think there is an easier answer to what is the meaning of life than this one!

We bought a leather sofa 12yrs ago. Big corner 5 piece one. Over the years we have had 4 cats 3 dogs two children clamber all over it (and obviously sat on a lot!)

We have never really stopped the animals using it but it still looks very good (some wear and tear scratches now) we deliberately went for leather because we knew material would be torn to shreds by the cats! Seems to have paid off so far!

It is easier now to keep then off if needed when we aren't there as dogs are created when we go out or upstairs with us at night and we only have one cat now and she prefers the kitchen a lot if the time (and scratching the stairs rather then the sofa!) and is shut out the lounge at night!

Froends had cars and a leather sofa.... first time I saw the sofa it looked great (no idea of budget) 6 months later .... let’s say those Cars liked jumping on it claws out like a pin pad.

We then had Cars gave them our older fabric sofa - nightmare to clean as they slept on it and constantly mounted. Plus as cats do sometimes walk through Cat poo find a nice mark... (now binned). Our leather one initially they were curious but one jumped on it when it was brand new (1st Day) they are not allowed into the house at all now as a result.
They even started to pull apart our brand new carpets

Your friends must have a massive house (and SUVs to get up onto the sofa). Us plebs usually keep our cars outside.

What does an SUV and plebs got to do with OP. Using a £6k sofa which might have dogs on it?

Piss on it and shout no very loudly. They'll get the message if you'r an alpha. It's really not hard to stop pets from sitting in/on your man cave stuff unless you're a small man :-) Give them a once and for all good kick. Or a decent bite.
