Hi

We have a dwarf hamster who is probably between a year and 18 months old

His fur is thinning and going bald on his tummy. Also one of his eyes is beginning to close although no sign of injury or anything other than being slightly closed

Are these old age signs or do we need to take him to the vet? Having had previous Syrian hamsters that all died a just months old we've not had one get old yet but then taking previous hamsters to vets there has been little they can do for such tiny creatures and we don't want to stress him out unnecessarily if there's nothing a vet can do until such time that we know he needs to be put to sleep

Its been a while since Baby and Fluffy were with us but they didn't last longer than two years. The eye is familiar. Baby's eye started to swell and pus came out. We did get some anti biotic but He didn't last long. They are fairly hardy but do not live that long.

Some years since our kids had them but I recall the vet saying there's an issue with how hamsters are bred - they're all too closely related so that makes them vulnerable to genetic disorders.

Personally I would take him to a vet to avoid any suffering

The thinning fur will be an age issue, it could be due to hormones or tumour but the eye is more the concern. Eyes can be treated esp if infection so vet trip may be worth it to asses the eyes. We are limited in what we can do for hammies but some things can be treated and helped with them.

Well after a vet visit end of last week it turns out poor hamster is older than we think and now blind

Also the thinning is old age as well as having mites so he has been treated and his skin is looking better already

One thing the vet said when we took him a fortnight ago was that there was a mass on one of his kidneys.

Sadly it appears he had a major hemorrhage last night which proved fatal. At least it appears the little chap didn't suffer and it was very quick. cry
