Hi All
My neighbour has a very small red dot laser that they use to play with the cats. I'm used to using laser pointers but I thought there is a risk of blindness if the beam hits a person in the eye.
My question is - are there special low intensity laser lights that are cat friendly ?
Thanks all

I wouldn't recommend using them. the cat will be frustrated as it never gets satisfactions from 'getting them' at the end. they will keep it busy but there are better toys out there.

Yes, thanks I appreciate your comments and have read that if using a laser toy you should switch to using a toy that can be physically caught after a while for the very reasons you have given
My question was more general, I just thought laser pointers could be dangerous

I googled your question and apparently:

Don't shine the laser directly into the cat's eyes, other than that, you should be fine.

It says that getting the laser in your/the cat's eyes probably won't do any permanent damage, just a few minutes of glare/afterimages.

Here's another link that goes into more detail about the pens, it seems that you should be fine if the laser is what it says it is:

Being a lazy git, I use one but carefully. Cat facing me, it is off. I tend to use it to highlight the bits on string/mice on door handle string etc. away from me and puss or get attention to the stick and bit of what ever is left on the end of the string. Like a starter motor when they are "meh".

Tried cat skittles once.....

Our youngest cat adores the laser pointer we've got. Literally to the point now where the second I start undoing the zip on the case it comes in, she's in pounce mode ready as soon as the red dot appears on the floor smile Chases it up wall, up doors, chats at it when it's on the ceiling... Loves it.

But yeah, I just make sure I don't point it at her face. Easy to avoid really, I wouldn't worry about any other precautions over common sense.

We have two cats, both hunters. A mate produced a laser pointer keyring...

One cat went absolutely ballistic - mach1+, backward, forward, up, down, every bloody direction.
The other cat just ignored it totally... It might as well not have been there.

We've had a couple of laser toys, the cats have initially been interested but it hasn't lasted, I guess because they never get to "catch" it. Will try combining with other toys (or the other cat!) and see if that works any better.

Or land the light on a food treat after a few mins of play to ensure they get the satisfaction of the hunt if a toy doesn't work it.

I got a cheap one from B&M, cats play with it for a bit and then realise its just a light and they get bored!

I remember i had a cockatiel, and by chance a laser pen i found while walking the dog.
It was amazing how this cocktiel was so aware of it!
It didn't matter what way tbe bird was looking, i would point the pen at a wall totally out of the birds view, and it's head would instantly spin round right to where the laser was pointing, it was weird!
