Hi
We are just in the process of adopting 2 cats, my partner is allergic but loves cats so she will put up with the allergy, hand washing etc
I saw this article, what are your thoughts Bex, or anyone else that might use acepromazine
Thanks
Barrie

There are numerous anecdotal stories of certain cat breeds being less allergenic than others. Difficult to prove but possibly true. As regards ACP, it is an "old fashioned" drug that many younger vets reuse to use, I have found it to have a very useful place in practice, but getting your vet to supply it might be difficult. The dose is certainly very low , so should minimise any risk of cat side-effects. Could ACP modify the composition of saliva? Sounds a bit bizarre but if more people try the regime then there should be more results come to the surface to convince one side or the other.
Interesting to know if you get any experience of it.

Ever thought of taking anti-histamines yourself rather than drugging the cat?

Or, go to a rescue and meet a few. There may well be one you are not allergic to.

There is also a product called PetAlCleanse, which is supposed to be effective in allergies, but I have no experience myself.

Hi,
Sorry but I have never heard of using acepromazine to reduce an allergic response.

As a nurse I cannot advise yes or no on using it, especially as I have no experience of it it would need a discussion with a vet.

However if it means anything I honestly could never see myself suggesting it as an option or using it on my cats as it is a sedative and lowers blood pressure.

As mentioned petalcleanse is a useful product in these circumstances and possibly antihistamine in the short term for your partner (it is possible with time she will develop a tolerance to a cat)

I do. Also find it weird that a holistic vet is suggesting this as a treatment and it would definitely be off licence and where are the studies to back this idea up? I am a bit dubious of it, accuracy of dosing could be problematic as well.

Having said all that find a vet willing to look into it and they may think differently.

Extra note I don't know what TheVet thinks but half a ml of acp even in that dilution doesn't seem that low? As a premed we often give no more than 0.1ml (often less) as an injectable dose.

Thanks all,
As I said my partners allergy won't be an issue, it was more a point of interest having read about it on the Jackson Galaxy site and wanted to understand more.
I appreciate the clarification on what it is and what it does 👍🏻
It does seem odd/worrying that it's given out on some sites based on what you've told me about it.
Much obliged as always for the knowledge and support in this forum
