I generally only tell the story of dogs after they have passed away, and in moments of sadness. For a change I thought it might be more fun to look back on almost four years with Shiloh, the Great Dane...

She is the third Dane to fill the kitchen with her outsize presence, with the same good humour and utterly brainlessness of her predecessors, Koda and Nina....

Born in October in Utah, she was the only dog of that colour in her litter

Said good bye to her breeder and made the long drive back to Arizona

where she grew

and grew

and grew

and grew

till she reached full height

and grew into her paws

Sharing her time with the poodle who died early this year after a very long life..

Loves cars;

and the desert where she winters:

But even now, the grey is appearing.She is still in the prime of life at 3 3/4 years old, but Danes typically live to be about 7 so she is on the bubble. She had serious health problems as a young dog and had a kidney removed but has been generally healthy since and loves to go on long car journeys. A nervous dog she is hugely sociable in the house but a bit twitchy around strange dogs; not in the least vicious. One of the previous Danes made 9 1/2 so there is hope that she may live to an older age. At this stage she is lively, affectionate,and completely non destructive. These are the good old days in her life, and I hope they will continue for years to come.....

Thanks for sharing, brightened up my day! Beautiful dogs and true gentle giants ... at their adult size, I imagine its hard to recall how small they once were smile

As with many dogs, Shiloh has one toy that matters , a disgusting moth eaten filthy fuzzy ball. takes it with her to bed and ignores all other toys. Strange animals, Danes.

Nina, her predecessor would only play with a thick knotted rope which she would fetch, and Koda did not rate toys, but carried her bed around with her and would drop it where she wanted to lie down.....

She's gorgeous.

As someone who would love a dog (and will get one the moment one of us can be home enough to allow fair ownership), it's lovely to hear the stories of others' dogs...especially when so lovely and clearly loved.
