I'm hoping someone can give me a bit of advice. One of our cats is a bit of a pain and has decided to start pissing in the house.

We have two litter trays around the house, plus a cat flap plus a door or window is normally open.

Last night she decided to piss right next to the litter tray.

Litter tray is always emptied as soon as we notice ones used it (they tend to only use it for a piss anyway). It's the same tray that we've had for a while that she's used without any problems and it's the same litter.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

Peeing can sometimes be a reaction to stress.

Has anything changed to make your cat stressed?

Could be infection, age incontinence, or stress.

How old, any changes in environment or behaviour?

Any of the above. Rule out medical with a vet first then look to behavioural. The top two articles in this link is a must read for behaviour advice and solutions.

We think shes 8, she is a rescue cat and they weren't too sure how old she was when they got her. We've had her for years now. No changes, we have three others and she mainly ignores them (as she has from day one), sometimes chases one of the younger ones.

Just had a look at that website, and we have had another cat climb in through a open window recently...could be that. Will get her taken up to the vets for a check up smile.

Definitely vet check, and the sooner the better.

Cats can avoid using the tray if they become to associate it with pain. Once they've got into the habit of going outside the tray, it can be very difficult to eradicate.

ETA: You also need more trays, and clean them scrupulously. One per cat plus one spare in the rule.

Our cat started peeing in weird places, never in her litter tray, it turned out to be dementia.

She also had arthritis and as a result couldn't clean herself, so we had her PTS, she was 21 though.

When my cat had kidney problems, he began to urinate around the house. It's better to take your cat to the doctor as soon as possible
