Thinking of getting a second dog
Discussion
After people's thoughts, we have a 15 month old golden retriever who has been rather ill over the last few months with meningitis, he's now on the mend. Anyway our breeder who we got him from has just had another litter of retrievers and two dogs are available.
We are interested in getting another one as company for the first one just wondering What are people's experiences of owning two dogs did you find it "double the trouble" or was it all okay.

I have always had two dogs at a time, they keep each other company, play together (except my current two) and generally keep each amused/in trouble together
I love them both dearly and I am currently lying on the floor with one on either side of me, one snoring while I hold his paw and the other with her head in the small of my back, I can think of few things better! These two are very different to each other and are obviously fond of one another but not close companions but they still stick up for each other, and are happy close together. Most dogs become very close to their housemate really quickly and are soon inseparable, I wouldn't even think about it, just do it!

Yep go for it.
We got Barry after having Daisy for just over a year, it was great as they kept each other company, played in the garden and had each other, we now also have Daphne; 3 dogs it's lovely watching them all playing in the garden on a warm day.
Since having 2 we've always said we would never go back to just 1.
Sometimes it can be a pain, especially when there is a disagreement, however on the whole 2 (and then 3) has been nothing but a positive experience, the evenings are nice too with the 3 of them spread out in the lounge asleep; Barry on the foot stool on my feet, Daisy snoring on the sofa to my right and Daphne asleep wrapped round my neck.

I've 2 miniature Schnauzers, half brother/sister, totally different characters.
My girl is the eldest at 19 months and my boy is 7 months, he is the more outgoing of the 2 but she is the one that sticks to me more even if she doesn't show as much affection she is a real charmer
As the others have said, they are great company and I don't think even I would go back to 1 now.

We got a friend for Rosie, our four year old Border Terrier and we were initially very unsure how it would pan out with a puppy, but she has doted on him and is very protective as the alpha dog and keeps him in check. She is lost without him , so watches him for us and keep each other amused for hours.
We got a west highland terrier pup as company for our 4 year old chocolate lab. God, how she hated that puppy - growled, snarled and grumped! Really hard work getting her engaged with the little bundle of energy....
4 years on they are best mates and inseparable... well worth it.

Apart from the additional expense, I never felt that going from one to two made much difference. It's when you're going up to three and four that you have to think about it
Having had three, two seemed odd, so we topped up again Easier with whippets than some other breeds though, I expect. We have a 5yr old male Bullmastif and a 5yr old male Border Terrier. They have become inseparable ,We were concerned about two males being together, and the risk that the mastiff might eat the terrier, but it has worked brilliantly with no problems. After this experience, I would always have two dogs rather than one on its own because I believe that a dog needs the company of other dogs.
